I have a 98 Gt and somehow my keys dissapeared on me. I only had the one but do have an extra remote pad. I heard you can just give the dealler the VIn # and they can get you one. Now can I go to any Ford dealer and get it the same day or is there a wait? Can I just get the one key or do I need to pay for 2.And how much would it cost? A lock smith told me $225, screw that.

with the vin they can make u another key but you are going to have to have it prgramed because its a PATS key. i think it comes out to like 120 for a programed key. you are going to have to get the car towe to the dealership tso they can program it tho.

might want to get 2 and might also want to reconsider that $225 quote

as far as actually getting the keys made i couldn't tell you. i know that when i have keys ordered from volvo it takes 7-10 days and the price out the door is around $450 for 1 key and the download:nice:

if you want another remote, just buy it but dont have the dealer program the remote. to prgram the remote you cycle the from off to on 8 times quickly and the car wil either honk or the doors will lock and lock, as soon as it does you press lock on one control and lock on the other and there you go, theyre both prgramed.

I heard it was like $72 a key and 98's and up need 2 keys. I just was wondering if any one has done it with a mustang without haveing any original keys. I thought they coupld just make it from the Vin without me towing it. But if thats the only way i'll have to do it.

with the vin they will make you a key, the car will crank but it wont turn on due to the key not being prgramed. i believe what you are talking about on the "2 keys" is that with certain cars, you can prgram a 3rd key if you already have 2 keys. this was way you dont have to connect the IDS to prgram the new key, but that only works when you already have 2 keys. if you only have 1 you need to connect the laptop to the car and program it that way.

the car has to be towed in, I deal with this at work all the time.

Do yourself a favor and get at least two keys programmed. That $225 is not bad for a re-program and two keys. The tow alone has got to be at least $50.

A few years ago out of curiosity I called a Ford dealer and asked him what it would cost to make a new computer chip key if I lost mine. They said $150 programming fee + the cost of the key! The car would also need to be towed to their shop. Needless to say I went to a locksmith and had him program a spare key for $50. Just bite the bullet and shell over the cash or be stuck with a driveway ornament!
