I need to buy a GREAT alarm for my car to (help) prevent those wanting to steal personal belongings or worse, my car. I want it to go off anytime my car is tampered with.
Does anyone have any of those alarms with a lcd remote and notifys you when/where your is be tampered with?(how do you guys like it?)
Is it possible to put "any" type of alarm system from a electronics store? or are there some that would not work with our old classics? sorry if thats a stupid question but Im totally new to these alarms.
...I need 2 get this done soon.

I'm sure they will work on our old cars. Just need power and ground. I to will be looking for a good alarm soon. One I think called Lojack, even has gps locater and from what I hear is the one thing that the cops will actually look for a stolen car. I've actually saw a stereo get ripped off in a parking lot. Those guys are faast! Getting beeped will not likely result in catching the dirt bags.

all you can really use off a alarms warnings is the dome light ,motion and ignition.The alarms of today are set up for door lock/unlock,power acc. etc. Scyteck has a alarm with in car mounted camera that when the alarm is tripped it will take a pic every couple of seconds and send it to the pager/remote.

Buy a club or put a battery disconnect on the car or something.

I think I'm going to look into RUSTYNUT's idea about the LoJack myself as I was
thinking the same thing as you are. You defininatly want the GPS system and I've heard as well the cops will actually look for your car with that system on it.

If you get it, wire it discreetly so it can't be found right off, anyone that would steal it is most likely up on this item and would look for it to disable it.

The alarm system would be a good idea also to keep the average punk from messing around with your car.

Don't underestimate how brazen a car theif can be, I've seen (heard about) them stealing a gorgeous 57 Chevy right outside this bar owners front door in broad daylight in Tampa when I lived there.

the only thing an alarm will do is annoy your neighbors. the only thing oyu can do to prevent your car from being stolen is to lock in an underground vault hidden in a mountain side behind your house, with the door welded shut. the best way to prevent car theft is to layer your defenses to make the thief pick an easier target. i use the grant vehicle security system to remove the steering wheel when i park the car. it also locks the top of the column to prevent another steering wheel from being put on. and since the cap is like 4" in diameter, it makes it very hard to steer the car. i also plan to use kill switches, some real, some fake, to help prevent theft.

depends on where you put them. some kill the ignition, some kill the starter, some kill an electric fuel pump. you can also set one up as a master kill switch, where you need all the switches on to start the car.

Mount the battery in the trunk, and put a disconnect switch there.

That'll fix it. If you disconnect the battery that's locked in the trunk, it'll be mundo difficult for somebody to start the car.......

That's up to you to decide, it's been about 30 years since I did one (gives you an idea how anchient I am, lol)

Most theives that are going to drive the car off would first run a hot wire from your battery positive term. to your coil positive terminal. Then they jump the starter and bingo your cars gone.

First, you could clip the negative wire on the coil, run a lead from the one clipped wire into the cabin and hook up to a switch, then run another lead wire back from the switch to the other clipped end of the coil wire. Turn the switch off and try and start the car, not gonna start because you broke the connection in the wire with the switch. Now hide the switch so it's not out in the open but easy enough for you to get to.

This is what others are saying you can do basically, you break the connections in other areas as well with switches and it takes a would be theif more time to try and figure out what you did to make the car not start.

I liked the battery in the trunk with a dissconnect idea, that would make it real hard for a quick steal. Hopefully they'll give up and move on. The clubs a good idea also, one for the steering wheel and another for their head, lol.

the other day i was tuning my megasquirt and decided to bring it in the house to upgrade the code. while i was walking with the ms in hand it dawned on me, hey this is the best damn way for someone to not hotwire your car.

I agree now a days people hear an alarm and they are more likely to get mad that it is going off then investigate why it is going off.

As for the kill thing I read maybe it was on this forum where a guy parked his car pulled the wire off his coil and left the car when he got back it was gone. One thing which is a positive and negative these cars are easy to work on and understand how they work.

So someone with a minor understanding of electrical could bypass most systems quickly.


But if someone does find a system that works well let me know I would be interested.

I read on another forum where a guy suggested connecting the kill switch that goes to the pos side of the coil so when the switch was off the coil was tied to the horn, so if someone tried to jump from the batt to coil they would be in for a little surprise. I thought it was a great Idea!

I have the grant security system with the disconnect wheel. The locking cap is great, and you will not be able to steer the car at all without the wheel.

You know wat is also a great security system? (if you have an automatic) There is this one product called the T-lock, it looks like a stock shifter handle except on the passenger side it is a key hole. When in lock, the metal tab that holds the shifter assembly in park stays in park, will not be able to lifted when you press the the button on the other side. So basically they can start up the car but it won't move anywhere... at all.
Only problem... the guy who patented it doesn't seem to be answering his email so i can order one. maybe you'll have better luck

there used to be a system on the market where you locked the brakes when you parked the car as well. it worked like a line lock you would use at the track, but with a key to lock and unlock the system. you would lock the system, then push on the brake pedal to set the brakes. when you unlocked the system it released the hydraulic pressure. another thing i though of is using a battery disconnect switch, hidden of course, between the solenoid and the starter. that way you cant jump the solenoid and crank the engine.

Not to bum all you guys out but if somone really wanted your car... they will find a way to steal it.

I was at a football game awile back we had parked our car next to this really nice 1967 shelby clone, we were all talegateing and playing some football when this tow truck came, hooked it up to the car, draged the car onto the tow truck and took off, we all thought it was a broken car but the alarms kept ringing, but about a hour later the owner came back and was freeking out.
I never found out what happend with his car.

If someone wants to steal something from you bad enough, its likely going to happen. Which is why i have a glock 19 handy at most times.

I have a regular on/off kill switch for my electric fuel pump, the average punk trying to steal a car is not going to look for a switch, and if your car fires off of what is left in the line then it will kill right away and the person will likely panic or run the battery dead by trying to start an engine without gasoline.

But like I said if they want it bad enough they will get it. I think i have only locked my mustangs doors once.
