Mark VIII vs. Taurus fan, pics for anyone trying to decide which to get

The Taurus fan is a little thinner but requires a lot more trimming to get the shroud to sit flush on the radiator (really important IMO if you're gonna use it...it helps to distribute air throughout the radiator). Otherwise, my buddy figured out a way to suspend the fan without the shroud inside his stock fan shroud...it's a pretty cool setup and since the stock shroud fits the radiator perfect, it utilizes the air better than you'd get with the Taurus shroud.

Would you happen to have pics of your bud's set up? I never thought of doing something like this.

No but i'll ask for some. He just cut out the circle that's around the blades and put 4 bolts/nuts at 10:00/2:00/4:00/6:00 and ran those to the shroud, then bolted them from the other side and just tightened/adjusted them so it was centered inside the shroud.

can you guys take some good pics of how you're mounting the fan to the radiator?

mine's on.....but i'd like a more "professional" looking setup if you know...

thanks

What i'm doing is pretty basic. On the bottom of the stock radiator there are some slots where the stock shroud used to sit...some clips went in these slots. I'm taking some 1'' wide L brackets (get'em at any hardware store, i got mine at Walmart) and riveting them to the bottom of the fan so that the L will kind of hinge into those slots and support the bottom of the fan. At the top there are 2 clip on screw recievers that the stock shroud bolted to...i'm gonna drill a couple holes through the shroud and run some long bolts into these. I may even bolt the bottom but i figured it's easier if they're not bolted at the bottom if you ever have to take it off.

after trimming my shroud with a cutoff wheel to make it thinner, I cut two slots in the bottom of the shroud to accept the stock clips and on the upper I cut aluminum "L" stock and pop riveted them to the shroud and drilled them to accept the stock upper monting bolts. Looks VERY stock.

I just found this...thought i'd pass it along.

Now THAT looks good. :nice:

Might do something similar with The Chubby in the future, as I'm eager to get rid of the vacuum cleaner-sounding "heavy duty" fan clutch in that thing, and I can score a junkyard electric fan and universal T-stat for the same price as it'd cost me to put in a standard fan clutch. In fact ... that might not be a bad idea to do the same on The Pervertible, too... :D

I have the Taurus fan on my Mustang and using it to cool a 408. The fan works great, and I don't understand why anybody would need the Mark VIII fan. My Taurus fan keeps the rad very cool and I wouldn't want the extra size of the Mark VIII fan cluttering up the engine bay or weighing the car down the extra pound :rlaugh:

In all honesty it's probably not necessary if you've got an aftermarket radiator, but my car for some reason has always run HOT....it doesn't over heat but it always runs super hot, so i'm all about the meanest fan i can get. At 2840lbs my car won't notice the extra pound of weight :nice:

Well here's mine. I put it on with butterfly nuts before i realized that the fan shroud clips were still on my radiator so i'm gonna find a couple bolts that thread directly into those and ditch the butterflys. On the bottom for whatever reason the stock fan shroud clips didn't come up high enough to clip the bottom of the new shroud onto, so i used an L bracket on each side rivetted to the bottom of the shroud and that clips down into the stock fan shroud clips to secure the bottom. It works pretty well, it's on there real solid. I still have to wire it up though and i'm gonna clean it up and hit it with some black Krylon Fusion (plastic paint).

For reference i trimmed 5/8 off the shroud and i've got pretty good clearance at the water pump pulley.
