I don't like my 95 cobra exhaust

Well, like it says in the title, I do not like the sound of my exhaust. I just bought the car and it has BBk LTs, BBK OR H pipe, and edelbrock mufflers. It sound too "blatty" if that makes sense, kinda like a pickup with cherry bombs on it. I like the hollow drone, with the mechanical popping sound at idle of 99.9% of the other 5.0s on the street. I have a stock intake, stock heads, mild cam. What gives!? Is it the mufflers? I plan on doing some modding soon, but the exhaust needs to be addressed first.

Thanks,

Carl

Ive never known a person with Edelbrock mufflers so I cant say for sure thats the difference, but I have virtually the same setup except BBK shorties with flowmaster mufflers. I think my flows have a nice deep sound, and sound nothing like a redneck truck. My guess would be to start with the mufflers, as there are so many to choose from and they sound very different brand to brand.

I suggest you checkout Youtube. I'm also searching for the “perfect mustang exhaust sound” and I was really surprised to see how many videos are out there showing cars idling, revving, and drive-bys. A friend of mine has the Bassani system on his car and the clips with his same system sound very similar, so I think the audio quality carries over reasonably well. Just search for Mustang Exhaust and crank up your PC speakers!

PS. Does anyone know what the difference is between the Flowmaster 40’s and 44’s? Do they sound different?

The Bassani stuff is really nice and gives a cleaner sound (definitely not "blatty" at all). Price can be an issue for sure though.

I would bet that Flows would solve 80 - 90% of your problem. Your mid-pipe really controls the volume/pitch of your exhaust (H pipe give a lower pitch, X gives a higher pitch), whereas the catback has the most effect on quality/distortion/smoothness of the exhaust note.

OEM mufflers

94-98 Mustangs came with Flowmaster muffflers, so if you want the stock sound I'd recommend swapping mufflers first. 99-04 (not sure about 05+) switched to Dynomax, they're more of a growl than a hollow drone.
My 95 had the oem mufflers on it when I bought it, and they sound nothing like the flowmasters I put on recently. I doubt ford has flowmaster manufacture their oem mufflers.

Your right on the second part, however dynomax manufactured from 84-98, they still make the Gt's mufflers, but the new shelby, roush, etc. have there own mufflers.

Your car sounds a lot like like mine. I dont care for it too much either...but that's because I want "greener" grass. Other people like my sound. I think the higher raspier pitch you are referring to is an inherent sound on the 4.6's I have 2-chamber flows NO cats and headers and it's still not the sound I want. If I get the new engine with cam, it will sound much better...lemme see if I can find the clip.
