Well since I got my wish of having the Big Block Section Started I thought I would share some of the little knowledge I have of the 460 motors.

460 Production runs went from 1969-1996
These are the production block casting numbers throughout those years.
C8VE-A, C9VE-A, D0VE-A, D1VE-?? and D9TE-AB

The C8VE-A, C9VE-A, D0VE-A, D1VE-?? blocks have rotating assemblies that are interchangable. The D0VE-A block is generally the most sought after block because they are 4 bolt mains and thicker cylinder walls which helps with the big power high performance engines we all want. Many a big block is seeing well over 750hp Naturally aspirated on pump gas with compression ratios in around 9.5 : 1 , very street friendly.

The D9TE-AB blocks were the blocks last used for production of the 460 from 1979-1996. There is a difference in the stroke of these blocks vs. all of the other production blocks, there stroke is slightly long than the older blocks and the crankshaft counterweights are a little thinner. A rotating assembly from a D9TE block will fit into an earlier block casting but an earlier rotating assembly won't fit into the D9TE blocks. Fuel injection was introduced into these motors around 1988 i believe, I can't say for certain. Most of these big blocks are running carbs though, old school baby!

There are many head castings for these blocks as well. The one head that only lasted a year of production is the D2VE, they are the redheaded step child of heads for a 460 and if your lucky enough to get a pair on a block just scrap em, the don't flow as well as the other castings. The best heads for a 460 are Ford Hemi heads, if you dod a search for them you can find em, I found one manufacturer wanted $19,999 for a set, i just about spilled my beer. other great sets of heads for the 460 are the Blue Thunder heads and Super Cobra Jet aluminum heads. These are current production heads so you don't need to go to swap meets or junk yards to find them. The run in the neighbourhood of $2500 as bare castings, unassembled without the valve train. I'll stop here and regroup and try to see what else i can tell everyone about our beloved Big Block.

looks like me, tweaked GT, and smockdoiley are the resident BBF gurus? lol...

FYI... to add some info for people interested in doing this swap.....

This swap is not as expensive as you may think, I built my motor for around $6500 for everything, yes its very fast. The torque is amazing compared to a smallblock. Unlike SBF parts that can hold around 450rwhp (stock 5.0L block) a stock early 429 or 460 block (even with 2 bolt mains) can handle 800+hp (cranks) and 1000+hp (blocks) with no real special prep, the weak link is car rods and stock pistons. Truck rods are the better ones to look for if not going aftermarket. There are many aftermarket parts becoming available for these motors as well. Scat is now making forged cranks for 521"- 545"+ strokers too (and even bigger on a stock block too). You don't need to use a special K member (you can use a stock 5.0L) but you will either need swap motor mounts available from FRPP or a custom motor plate, Swap headers (hooker super comps) and a swap oil pan (FRPP). The best auto tranny to use reliably behind the 385 series is a C6, you can use an AOD driveshaft and have it shortened (you need to measure how much) to the correct length and have a C6 yoke put on the front like I did. I used as much stuff from the 5.0 as i could get away with and even made 2 serpentine setup for use with mech. and E- waterpumps. So far its been running and terrorizing the streets of NE Ohio for 3 years now and never had a single problem. Any questions just post them since my PM box is always flooded.

Thanks.... :p

Heres some misc pics of my BBF and a vid of a guys 472 FI fox starting fro the first time (one of my inspirations):

Damn! Nice ride gopher! I'm by no means an expert. I'll have many questions to ask as I get into this build. I'm gathering as much knowledge about these motors as possible to help along the way. It's nice we have someone that has done the build already. I do have some questions now but I'll start them in another thread.

ExplodingGopher: That is one wicked looking Stang !

I have done 3 Fox 460 Swaps but my latest is my best. I managed to get everything to clear the most difficult hood to use...the 87-88 Turbo-Coupe.

I even have a 1/2 inch plate under the card to boot.

Your Mustang looks just awesome!!

Parts list

Thanks for looking for the parts list!,, with that swap! pro and cons? from going carb, compared to fuel injection on a 514 set up, other than the big cost??

There is a difference in the stroke of these blocks vs. all of the other production blocks, there stroke is slightly long than the older blocks

First of all, I was glad to see a big block section added, something I can relate to:nice: and one little minor correction, it's the bottom of the cylinder that's longer, not the stroke. About a 1/4".

OK her is a couple of Questions...... I have a 89 Gt that I have stuck a DOVE 460 with a miner cam shaved DOVE heads torker || intake, I have it in the care with a C-6 ( 3500) stall. I am doing the final put together crap and have a couple issues help if you will.
Where is the best place to put a eletric fuel pump?
I used a 2 inch space for my K-member to body to keep the engine and trand straight with rearend but my steering arm rubb my Headers.
I live in a Town where CHEVROLET rule the town and I have the only 5.0 that at this time beats them with a 12.03 best but I fear this year is going to change. PLease help Racing starts in MArch

hey guys awesome cars. but unfortunatly i havent built mine to show off yet. but i do some questons for it. im building a 75ish 460 the bottom end is stock with the exception of a 268 voodoo cam and lifter set. the heads are factory but ported on intake and exh. with some edelbrock dual valve springs. its basically ready to go together but i was wondering would it be worth while to add some roller rockers and upgrade my push rods a bit. its not meant to be extreme just fun and different. any info or opinions are appreciated

AJE(Anthony Jones Engineering) makes a swap K-member for us BBF guys and its engineered to set the motor as low as possible....if I read it right.... the block bolts dirrectly to the K-member(no motor mounts). This should be very helpfull to level the motor/trans to rear end angle with out those 2" K-member spacers. I havent ordered mine yet, its next on the list!

Hey, thanks for mentioning me. I havent posted in so long that I'm surprised you remembered me, lol. I've taken the old 466/5-speed out and am redoing it. I've just started a new thread recounting all the clearance issues and parts I've used. If you hound me enough I may post pics. I've taken a different approach then the rest of you so I have a fresh perspective to draw upon. Scot Rod
