Fox body auto trans

Newbie here. I don't really consider my fox a "classic" Mustang, but it seemed to be the only category that fit. Excuse me if its the wrong spot.

I have a 1983 GLX convertible with a carburated 3.8L V-6 and auto trans. Is this a C-3 or a C-4? Whatever, its junk. For short money, I can get a trans from a '93 Mustang 2.3L 4 cylinder. Am I correct in assuming that it is an AOD? Will this bolt up to my V6? Will it work considering that I am carburated and pre-computer (?) Thanks in advance for your help.

The AOD was most often used behind 5.0 engines; the four and six cylinder engines from the mid '80s to mid '90s were commonly attached to the A4LD. That's about all I know on the '80s non-V8 automatics. You might try the 2.3 Tech or 5.0 tech forums.

You'll need a conversion type cable such as one offered by Lokar? to use an AOD behind a carbed 3.8. Fox Tbirds had AOD's behind the 3.8 and 5.0's. I believe the bellpattern is different for the 4 cyl. The newer AOD-E is a better trans and may be worth searching out over the regular AOD. Some 80's vans used a carbed AOD, though are hard to find. A C4 is a good trans, the C5 is not so much. Stay away from any A4LD, IMO. The newer 4R70's are an upgraded AOD-E for the most part with a better gear ratio. I just pulled an AOD from my '88 Tbird, so if you're up my way, you can have it, cheap.

You more than likely have a C3. You can swap in a C4 if you can find an appropriate bell housing. The AOD is going to be a tight fit if you can find one with the right bell housing - Most were used on 5.0 and up.
The C4 can take anything you can throw at it up to about 1000 HP with an appropriate build.

Paul, the 3.8 V6(ditto for the 4.2 truck V6) has the same transmission bell pattern as the small blocks.
