06 GT pinging with CAI/tune

My 06 GT is pinging at 4K RPM under full throttle after installing a Bullitt intake and Brenspeed tune. I am running the 87 tune and after getting the pinging I tried running two tanks of 89 and one of 91 and it still makes a pinging sound. With 91 I didn't notice it until the 5K mark but it was definately still there.

I contacted Dave @ Brenspeed and he said that is really odd and that since they don't change the timing on an 87 tune it shouldn't ping at all. I don't remember it ever making the sound before the intake/tune, but I am surprised that running 91 octane wouldn't take care of it.

Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? Could I be hearing something else? It sounds like pebbles being shaken around in a tin can.

My only thoughts now are to put the stock intake back on and load the stock tune and see if it still has the problem.

That could be it. I did try 87 Chevron which seemed to help but it didn't go away, and since I thought a higher octane would do it I went back to the closest station, which is Flyers, for the 89 and 91. Cheapest place in town :D

I'll try Chevron again as soon as I get this gas run down and see what I get.

Try different gas. Are you sure it's not the injectors or cam phasers making noise though? We all have a habit of listening and trying to find something "wrong" whenever we install a part. I know I'm guilty as charged. I can't tell you how many times I've got myself worked up thinking something was wrong after I installed something.

I can't say for sure that it isn't something else. I'm not sure how loud the injectors or cam phasers ccan get on these cars. All I can say is that it is something you don't have to try to listen for. It's loud enough that you could hear it with the radio on or windows down even.

I have a digital camera that can capture a small amount of video with sound so I am going to see if I can do that. If so maybe that will help ID it.

Best way to be sure not too ping, is get car custom tuned w/ fuel you'll use for aggressive/race tune and have them give you a 'safe' tune for when you are in a bind and have to use some lesser fuel.

Saving a few $ here and there arent worth ruining a motor/not using the mods you have; 93 Chevron only IMO
