87 gt hold key on the on pos and let go of clutch it stays started? read plz

if you hold the key to the on pos and keep it there let off the clutch it well stay started if i go to ingage the clutch something grinds like the starter ? i let off the key and it want to die i turn it more it stays started nutural safty? switchh any help please

ok if i turn the key to start the car i press the clutch in i must hold the key to the on pos and not let go if i try to hold the clutch in while iam holding the key in the on pos something grinds like the starter or something soon has i let off the key car dies i tryed a new coluem wireing pice i dont no something to do with starter?? nurtal safty
 
I'm a little confused but here it goes. you have to push the clutch in to start the car anyways so that's not the problem, unless the safety swith was the problem in which case the car shouldn't start at all. i'm thinking the starter is stuck engaged, after you start the car the grinding you hear is the starter and it might be jamming the flywheel stalling the car. try taking a long skinny pipe or very long screwdriver and going betwen the header tubes to get to the starter soleniod, the use a hammer to tap it. you can try and get it from underneath also. sometimes this will release the armature and pull the gear back in, if this works and the car starts fine then you need a starter. if not check all the connections from the starter back to the battery. This is my best guess going by your description.
