Is it the clutch??

Question... Just bought a 97 4.6L standard shift and when I'm on the throttle pretty good and shift from 1st to 2nd, I hear a noise that sounds like the clutch or something is still spinning pretty hard. It does the same thing under hard accelleration from 2nd to 3rd, but never happens after 3rd. Any idea what this is? Probably going to take it to the shop to get looked at but just wanted an idea of what the problem might be.

Sorry for the confusion. Let me see if I can explain this better. When I'm driving normally and push the cluth to shift gears, everything is fine. When I'm on the gas kind of hard and push the clutch to shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, I hear a noise for about 1 second that sounds like something is spinning very fast. It doesn't affect the shift or the performance, I'm just wondering if this is normal, a common problem, or something that seriously needs to be looked at ASAP.

It would help if you could record the sound at put it on youtube or something. It doesn't sounds like anything I'm familiar with, but maybe I don't understand your description.

Ok. Guess I'll have to figure out how to post the video later. For now, here's the link to the video on youtube. From the sound clip, it almost sounds like grinding gears, but that's not what's happening. You may have to turn your speakers up a little bit to hear it. By the way... I didn't hear it when shifting into 3rd today.

It's tough to hear and tough to say what it is. It may be your throw out bearing... Does it ever chirp when you push the clutch in or let it out?

What about the serpentine belt surging when throttle is backed off. Look for black power on the timing cover between the alternator and water pump.

I hear a kind of low winding pitch when going like 80 mph and press the clutch pedal and put it in first w/the clutch still disengaged on my car, what you hearing might be normal T-45 transmission noise, I've read of bent shifting forks and the clutch not completely disengaging w/these transmissions. plus 2nd and 3rd are grinding but, that sounds like normal wear and tear considering that those are the gears that are shifted through the most.

You were doing 80 mph and put your trans into first and it didn't come apart on you ? Even if you don't let the clutch out, the internals in your trans are going to be spinning super fast, well beyond what they are made to. Don't put your trans in first at high speeds, its bad for it...

As for what the original post is about.... from what I can tell from your description of the noise... it sounds like the synchro doing their job. You might want to consider trying to adjust your clutch, you may not be getting full disengagement when you clutch in. I couldn't hear the noise in either video but then my laptop's speakers aren't the best.

Step 1 on almost any trans problem is to adjust the clutch. How many miles are on the car and the clutch ?

Thanks for the info fellas! There are just over 110,000 miles on the car. No idea how many are on the clutch because I just bought the car about a month ago. I need to put it in the shop and geet some work done to it anyway, and I'll have them check the clutch and see if it needs adjusting or anything. When I find out what it is, I'll be sure to let everyone know just in case some one else has this problem in the future.

As far as the video is concerned. You have to listen VERY close. When I shift from 1st to 2nd, there is a noise that you should hear. I know it's hard to hear because I can barely hear it myself and I know what I'm listening for! LOL!

Does it sound like something is starting to wind up as you go to put it into gear ? Sort of like a zzzzzZzZzZZZZZZZZZ type sound or a whiring ?

sounds like a "whistle & woosh" sound to me. is that what youre hearing?

On the first video if you listen closely at exactly 9 seconds, you'll hear it. On the second video, its at exactly 8 seconds.

Do you have an aftermarket shifter? That can cause you to hear more transmission noise.

What it really sounds like is you just need to get your shifting down with the new car. I don't know what cars you have had in the past but it took a little time to get use to the cable clutch for me. Your shifting is a little on the slow side and it sounds like you are staying on the gas a tad when you shift. No need for powershifting / half-powershifting during daily driving. If that delay in the shift is not due to you shifting slowly then it may be time to open up the transmission.
