Noticed a Ford ad for "Mykey" here while browsing and clicked it out of curiosity.
The standard class-exclusive* programmable MyKey™ feature employs several innovative tools designed to help parents encourage teenagers to drive safely. Standard settings (that cannot be altered or disabled) include: • The Belt-Minder® System, which reminds front passenger occupants to buckle their safety belts, cannot be disabled and will not expire (the audio system also gets muted whenever BeltMinder is activated)† • Low-fuel warnings are displayed in the message center followed by a chime when the Distance-to-Empty value reaches 75 miles (120 km) • If equipped, the available Reverse Sensing System, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) with cross-traffic alert and forward collision warning cannot be deactivated. Optional settings, which can be changed by authorized users, include: • Limiting the vehicle’s maximum speed to 80 mph (130 kmh); visual warnings and chimes are displayed at the vehicle’s start to inform the driver that the vehicle speed is limited to 80 mph (130 kmh) • Should the vehicle speed limit setting be activated, at 75 mph the driver is given an audio warning that the vehicle is approaching the top speed; at 80 mph, the driver is warned that the vehicle has reached the top speed and is encouraged to check his/her speed – and drive safely – via visual warnings and chimes. There are several maximum speed settings available, including 45-, 55- or 65-mph (75-, 90-, or 105-kmh. • The maximum volume of the audio system is limited to 45 percent. • The AdvanceTrac® System cannot be turned off. When this setting is on, the MyKey user will not be able to deactivate the system. This prevents the driver from burning the tires, performing doughnuts and other unsafe practices.

Concur with Nic. My son is 3.5 years from his license (should he be deemed worthy) As I see him right now, he is a responsible thoughtful kid. 12 1/2. what happens at 16 17? i dont know. I know I did stupid stuff and my parents would say that I was the same as he is. Actually - speedlimited to 80 is kinda high. Most kids are out local and 80 can get you into some good trouble on back roads.

let's just hope auto manufacturers/government don't decide to make them mandatory for everyone in the future.

This is my line of thought.

Besides, I bought my first car myself, and had to get a job to pay for it. I see a lot of kids these days get their cars handed to them on a silver platter (even if it isn't' really a nice car).

Then again, I did some pretty stupid stuff too, but anything I broke, I had to fix. Course I'm 30 now, and still do stupid stuff. :D

Well it's user adjustable.. Can be set to 45mph, 55mph, 65mph or 80mph. The default setting is 80mph.

80? you couldnt even move with the flow of traffic on a fast highway. I think all these over bearing parents should cut their kids lose, they are kids, they are dumb, and they are gonna screw up and do kid stuff. I know noone here obey's every traffic law, we all have had speeding tickets, or laying drags or wreckless drivings. what is the point of having a car when your a kid if you cant show off for girls and make mistakes? We were kids without all that limiting stuff, hell only 1 vehicle of the 7 I have possessed had an airbag. And maybe if the parents weren't so overbearing there wouldnt be so many messed up kids coming out of generation x right now

Agree to a point. (80 is the posted speed limit now in some parts of the country). However, if I were a parent of a teen driver, I'd damn well make sure no "mistakes" where made in the new, $35,000 muscle car at triple digit speeds. I'm all for letting kids be kids and learn from their mistakes, but when it comes to a potentially a life and death situation, parents have a responsibility to step in and prevent the kinds of mistakes that end with no opportunity for learning.

At the very least, it could be a fun way to screw with over people you let drive your car.:D

All it's missing as all around safty locks on the doors that keep the doors locked while the ignition is on. and windows that don't roll all the way down. I can see it from a safty point but I still think it's stupid. But I'll never buy anything post 2005 is my attitude right now.
