First Thread - AOD replacement

Hello from Northern Virginia
Hopefully this question will not cause lots of laughing and finger-pointing, but here goes:
I hired a shop to replace the AOD transmission in my 89 LX Convertible. I provided the used transmission, which I bought from a reliable source.
The guy from the tranny shop called today and told me that the convertible and the hardtops had different trannies, and that the one I bought is for a hardtop, and that I need to have the driveshaft shortened 1/2 inch for and extra $100.
Does this sound correct to anybody? Is it BS?
Thanks,
Rich

He is offbase about transmissions differing between the hardtop and the convertible.

However there is a difference between some of the AODs. AODs that were installed in some of the Lincolns have a longer tailshaft which will necessitate a shorter driveshaft. I can't remember if the ones from the trucks are also longer but I know that the Lincoln AODs are longer. When I swapped mine I made sure to measure. I ended up with one from a Mercury Grand Marquis in my 93.

Hey guys, new to the site, and Im not meaning to hijack, but my question DOES pertain to the OP question about the AOD (sort of)

I am doing a swap for a customer right now...car is a '93 GT, and as delivered had a C4 in it (yes, I know, not original to the car) and customer wants an AOD put in. It has the AOD shifter still in it, but IS missing TV cable.
Now, customer supplied AOD and converter and everything is fresh/rebuilt from some shop in Florida.
So, have few questions:

Does Ford still have the TV cable for sale? Or is it junkyad time? 2nd, how do I go about routing/adjusting it properly to make sure I don't burn up tranny.

Other question pertains to length..as I was installing AOD in car, got it bolted up, and went to put in driveshaft. Car is on 2 post lift, so all of the weight was OFF the rear suspension, so just dead weight, and I had to shove driveshaft as far as I could get it to go inside tranny and was JUST able to slide it up over pinion flange.
So, is it possible that he brought in a Grand Marquis AOD that you guys are saying is longer than a Fox Body AOD?

Again, not meaning to hijack, just felt OP could benefit as well as myself from info shared here. Thanks

Does anyone have overall case length dimensions for Fox AOD/Grand Marquis etc..AOD?

I wanna say the passenger car AOD is 1" longer than the mustang AOD.

As for tv cable....junkyard time.

OK, thank ya brother.

That would make sense then...Im betting that this a passenger car AOD then. I just don't see this drvieshaft working as it it is too long. Once I load the suspension up, gonna shove that drivehsaft furhter in, and is gonna be bottomed out. Looks like it's time to have DS shortened.

TV cable...any F.I. 5.0/AOD setup will work? passenger car/Fox body/cougar/Tbird??? Or no?

Thanks again
