Engine Hoist Adjustment?

Hey guys,

I want to readjust the chain length and bolts i used for my engine hoist but i already have the engine on it. would it be ok to set my engine down on a pallet for a minute or 2 while i readjust the chain length and bolts? or will that will the weight of the engine ruin the oil pan?

thanks

Do you have a spare tire ... just the tire laying around?? I use that to set my motor on quite frequently it cradles the pan and keeps it all levitated

No, just the floor or anything really. Hell ive even let it rest on the k member before just sitting in the engine bay haha. As long as you let it down really slow and don't like slam it it will be fine. The oil pan is pretty strong.

the biggest reason i am thinking about lowering the engine is to change the bolt i have the chain hooked up to. if you look at the attached picture, you can see the bolt sticks out kind of far out of the head. I am nervous if the chain moves to the end of the bolt when i am trying to put the engine in it will snap.
the bolts are grade 8 bolts and they are the same bolts i used to mount the engine to my engine stand. the engine has been hanging by these bolts for a few days now and nothing has happened so hopefully i am just worrying about nothing.

do you guys think i am good even though they stick out kind of far? I am planning on dropping it in tomorrow.

thanks again for all the help!

yeah that may hit the firewall or make removal a pia.

thanks, i didn't even think of that. I bought some shorter bolts but what do you think is the best way to swap them out with the engine and tranny on the hoist? i would hate to ruin my new oil pan gasket by setting it down but it sounds like others have done that and had no issues.

any advice would be sweet. I am planning on putting it in this afternoon.

thanks again!

You can set it down with no issues like others an old tire is great or you can sit it down on the floor gently and support the weight on some 2x4s on the pan rails or motor mounts. While sitting it down on the floor shouldn't hurt it you risk pushing the oil pan in a little which could alter the pan to pickup clearance
