About 8 months ago my starter fried so I replaced it. Yesterday when I went to start the money pit I had to turn the key 3 or 4 times before the starter engaged and started, but it got hung up for a second or two after the car started.

Then the fun started I pulled the car into my garage shut the car off got out leaving it in gear and as I walked away the starter engaged the car almost drove itself through the wall. Long story short I jumped in the door slammed against the column and had to have my wife come out and turn the power off from my battery switch in the back. All this without the key in.

Is this a starter relay issue, I've never heard of this? Looking at the relay the PO put in, it's not a ford motor-sports one looks, pretty cheap to me. The ground on the starter is a little old and could be replaced but I don't know what's going on.

Anyone experience this.

do a search for starter solenoid engaging. It is a common problem on these cars. Some of the culprits are

weak battery
bad ground wires
bad ground on solenoid
parts store solenoids- only use FOMOCO ones
bad ignition switch

Not sure what your setup is because you don't have your car info in your sig. The 91' and older Foxes had a single solenoid on the fender. Some of the 92's and all of the 93's had two solenoids; one on the fender, and one on the starter. Let me know what you have, and I will let you know how to rewire it failure free with a good starter.
