Been doing some research fo my Lawyer buddie's car. Its a 2.3 auto right now, and over the past 8 years or so he has put two short blocks in it because the passenger side of the block has broken off twice, and he's replaced the trans once, because the bellhousing cracked in the same location. I have an MFI 3.8 and AOD from a 90 T bird. We are considering this swap because the engine and trans in the car are both broken again. Our aim is to build in reliability, and actually, better mileage, with the v6. Better performance would be a plus, but not part of the main goal. This is NOT a sportscar, and we have no illusions of winning stoplight races. We live in the desert, where roads are long and straight for 50 miles at a stretch. No plans for canyon carving, never gonna see a racetrack of any kind. It's a cruiser, period.
I was at the "used parts buffet" recently, and came across a 94 with a v6 and t5. Having researched the t5, I see that in 94 they deepened the bell housing to locate the shifter in the then new body.
My questions are these:
What might be causing the 2.3 and trans to be breaking, and, will our planned redesign fix this?
And, if we choose to go with the t5 from the 94, would relocating the engine forward 5/8 inch put the shifter back where it needs to be in the 88?
