Hey Guys,

I’m new here and I always come here for tips and “how to” info. But now I’m starting a bigger project that sort of forced me to create an account.

I own a 1996 Mustang GT Convertible (4.6L SOHC NPI Motor), the body is really clean, just a few chipped paint scars on her, but it has about 10-15% underbody rust (my guess). But the motor has about 130,000 miles on it so it’s about time for a new motor and I want the PI head upgrade anyway.

I’m purchasing a 2002 Mustang GT 2V motor with 8,000 miles on it, from a co-worker. I’ve been doing research on this swap and it seems pretty straight forward. But do you guys have any other tips or advice, anything helps! PLEASE! THANKS!

It's almost as straight forward as it gets. Some of the best advice I can give:
  • Takes lots of pictures during the removal.
  • Take lots of pictures of the original motor on the engine stand.
  • Put both motors on an engine stand and make the donor look like the original. It's is vital to re-use the original electrical harness and ignition.
  • get NEW motor mounts. The Mustang is hard on the motor mounts and there will never be a better time to replace them.
  • There are slight differences in the PVC system. Multiple ways to handle but it's not hard
  • There are slight differences in the heater return line. Multiple ways to handle.
  • There are slight differences in the front belt routing.
  • You will need to swap oil pans if you expect the 96's low oil sensor to work.
  • If you wont to retain the oil cooler it's necessary to swap. However if this were my car, i would keep the non-cooler version. Or re-build the 96 oil cooler before putting it back into service.
Good luck.

its fairly easy if you going stock all the way , just a total 100% motor swap , but when you get to getting into the mods then that is were the headaches come - besure to replace your oil pressure sensor and put it on the motor befor you install it
