New P/s Pump Sounds Awful

Good morning all, here's my problem. Installed new rack and new p/s pump last weekend. The pump whines horrible worse than old one. I replaced the return line as well, I have no visible leaks so I don't think I have an air leak. Ive driven it about 200 miles already and not any better. I had it jacked up when I bled it, turning wheel side to side. Could I just still have air in it? It's a remand rack and pump from advance. I know, but it's not my daily so couldn't spend the money for new parts. The only fact thing I can thing is there was still some old fluid in the pressure line? The old rack was leaking and I was using Lucas stop leak so maybe that's too thick for new pump? Also I used type F fluid for the new parts

Flush the power steering system...

Buy several extra quarts of fluid to run through the system to flush it when you change the rack. The car needs to be up on jackstands for the next step. Fill the pump up, start the car, and turn the wheels lock to lock to bleed the air out. Then stop the engine, disconnect the low pressure hose (the one that is secured with a hose clamp) and drain the pump. Re-connect, refill and do it several more times or until the fluid looks clear and not burnt or black.

If that doesn't fix it, you can either lean to live with the noise or replace the pump. It is not uncommon to get a replacement pump that is noisy.

The ford replacement power steering pumps for our cars are junk. You'd have been better off running a used one from an early to mid 90's full size van. Almost a direct bolt in and twice the pump we were saddled with.

I got a rebuilt pump for my excursion and it sounds horrible. I think for some parts the quality of the rebuild is dependent on the problem with the core. Certain pieces never get replaced. They probably just reseal whatever junk pump they get. That said, whining may indicate an incomplete bleed. If you run it long enough that way it'll go bad fast. Mine is more of a loud hiss ... abnormally loud.

mine make noise too, i just learn to live with it. Every ford pre 95 have louse PS anyway.

correct me if im wrong, but I read some where, that add a bottle ford LSD ( the stuff that add to rear diff ) to quiet the noise.

I went through 3 pumps back to back earlier this year to get one that didn't whine and I'll be damned if the one that finally quit whining already leaks.

The best cure is to go to a manual rack and don't be a little girl about the steering effort in a parking lot.
