Like the title says I have smoked 2 coils today and I can't figure it out. Car ran fine then died like it ran out of fuel. Will not refire. Cranks over just fine. But if you leave the key on to check voltages or for spark the coil starts to sizzle and then smokes like a powwow. It is like the tfi is stuck in push start mode and not turning the coil off just charging it till it blows smoke.

Disconnect the coil and use a Noid test light on one of the fuel injectors to make sure that the PIP sensor and TFI are working OK. You should get a regular flash each time that injector would pulse while the engine is cranking.

Plan on replacing the coil after you finish the diagnostic testing. It will undoubtedly fail at the most inopportune time...
