I understand about ... All motor Honestly ... I'll just come right on out and ... Say It I think it is not best to pick a cam that will work with the pcm I base that statement upon ...... Maximum efficiency before all else and That includes money spent ... well ... to a certain degree When the cam is chosen based upon ... If it works with the pcm One makes a compromise that will cost power Pick a cam that will yield the amount of tq/hp you desire and One that will operate in the rpm range (power band) you desire Now ... having said that You got that little silver box in the passenger kick panel THAT ... is what you use to deal with drivability issues Yes ... This method will set you back more $$$ however IMHO ... This method will give you more ...WAY MORE ... Options I mean ... If you think long term Ya most likely will want to tune it to get max power even if you did pick a cam that will play nice with the pcm Grady
Yeah but most of the cams designed for our year cars have excellent horsepower and torque numbers and great driveability. If he's going to keep the motor pretty stock for now, a custom cam or one not designed for our pcm's isn't going to be much better. Plus he'll need a bunch more money for the twEECer of PMS.
I'm not here to argue or anything like that I am here to poke and prod my gear head buds to think differently from the masses Just trying to stimulate a bit of discussion I've just not seen that in the many dyno curves I've looked at Most of them have had soft low end tq curves and produce lower peak power at lower rpm levels As one of those ... Custom Cam kinda guys I feel the money spent there yields maximum benefits in many different areas and gives the user so many more options that ... well ... if some want details ... that needs to be another thread I was not thinking so much ... Custom Cam I was thinking OTS cam with more ... meat to it ... TFS 1, and such Yes ... I did say it would be more $$$ in the long run I can't see the thinking of buying a bunch hot rod parts but Not tuning to make the best use of them Another thing that is kinda silly ... if you think about it If one has a GT40 based combo sitting on an OEM sb Does it make sense to step up to better h/c/i stuff to obtain only 15 to 30 more hp Thinking along those lines I see a blower should be in the list of things to be considered :Word: We always need to remember ... it costs nothing to ... Consider Grady
nope didnt order the cam yet. and grady i totally understand what your sayin. im not looking to make this car a crazy street machine.just a sane street machine. i was thinking about ordering the cam within the next few days though. im going to be going home for leave in the beginning of october and plan on taking it to the shop then. so 95 cobra whats your opinion on cam choice.
Well ... I guess we all have different ideas about what a .......... Sane Street Machine Is I think I could pull another 50 from mine and that would be just about it without loosing too much drivability So I guess that would be my idea of Sane ....... at least for now Here are a few OEM iron head based combos You can look at what they were able to achieve with parts similar to your parts I would wonder if you see YOUR IDEA ... of such a combo within the group Grady
wow thats good stuff grady thanks. and cobra, whats your name by the way so i can stop calling you cobra haha. i think im gonna go with trickflow stage 1(flame on) ive read tons of threads about all the alphabet cams and tfs and this one seems to be solid. nothing really bad said about it.and it sounds awesome!! gonna be busy on leave.
Heres the numbers I were telling you with Steeda 19, almost same engine as ours. GT 40 heads Cobra intake cold air exhaust Before: 251 RWHP @5,200 rpm 288 RWTQ @4,000 rpm After 270 RWHP @5,500 rpm 300 RWTQ @4,000 rpm
My name's Marc, or Sgt Ludwick to you!!! Just kidding, btw what's your MOS??? I remember when I came back on leave from overseas I had boxes of parts to put on my cobra.
I will say Marc has a good point about drivability I think a more aggressive cam than the Steeda 19 has more potential but It will not play as nice with the pcm ... WITHOUT PCM OPTIMIZING Then again ........... That is the whole point of what I wanted to bring out here There is a trade off on both sides It really boils down to application (doesn't it always) or What your long term goals might be Grady
