I have a 2007 GT and that I would like to put flowmaster mufflers on, but I keep hearing on different forums about how crappy they sound on the '05's and up. I used to have '99 GT that had flowmasters on it and I loved the sound, that is the sound I am looking to get again in my '07 (I am open to using other brands of mufflers I just don't want the sound to be super loud). What set-up do ya'll suggest? I am not looking to spend alot of money and not really concerned with gaining alot of HP. Thanks Beth
I've heard flowmasters in person, they definately sound different than flows on a 2v motor. They still sound good though. The flowmasters are not super loud, I've read a lot of people complain that they are just a hair too quiet. My gibsons sound a lot like the flows, they growl under hard acceleration, but are relatively stock sounding at cruising speeds. If you are looking for attention then go with the SLPs. They sound like an old muscle car.
If you want the sound from the older 2v's I would suggest buying the mufflers that were made for them (with offsets so they will fit in the cutouts) and have hangars welded in. Friend of mine has this done and thought it doesn't sound exactly like the older 2v's it does sound more aggressive and mean than the flows that are made for our 3v cars.
also keep in mind the location of the mufflers has changed since 99. being located at the rear of the car (on the 05 and up) changes the sound/pitch. stay away from an x-pipe also if you want to keep that deep throaty sound.
Here are 2 clips of mine running the Pypes O/R H pipe($173 shipped from Brenspeed and is said to add 8 HP/10 TQ)with the stock mufflers. I want my Flows back on which sounds a whole lot louder than the stockers with the H(no outside clips yet), but this is a cheaper route and has none of that drone if that's not your style. Here are 2clips from inside the car with the H Pipe and Flows.
All about sound baby !! Ford GTA's sound the best for price/ 50 state legal. Total hotness in a tunnel, trust me on that
I don't know much about exhaust, but I thought I heard somewhere that x pipes or something like that was illegal in some states. I just want to make sure that I'm not putting anything illegal on my car. Beth
If you want to stay legal, you don't want an O/R x pipe or O/R h pipe. O/R means off road, which means that they have no catalytic converters. To stay completely in the letter of the law, stay away from even the catted x or h pipes. You are not supposed to move or change the cats at all. Chances of anything happening are slim to none, but technically, if you want to stay legal, leave your stock cats where they are. The best thing if you want a better sound is to find a car that has the system you are wondering about, and hear it in person. Find a Mustang club, and go to one of their events. Or find out where people cruise or hang out. If you hear a car you like, ask the owner what they have. Go to a car show, and ask the '05-'07 'stang owners what they're running, and ask to hear the car run. It's all a matter of personal taste. I have SLP Loud Mouths, with stock exhaust otherwise. I could tell you that they sound the best, (true, in my opinion), and that I get people coming up to me and asking about my car just because I idled through a parking lot (also true). But if you got them, you may absolutely hate them. Some people think they are outrageously loud, and to them, maybe they are. I do take it easy when I'm leaving the house at 6:30 AM, or coming home at 2:00 AM, but I did that with the stock mufflers too. I have read here, and on many other forums, of countless people who tried 4, 5, or 6 different systems before they found the one they liked. That's a lot of money to burn through, when you could invest a little time into some research instead.
i noted you are in houston, im just south of you in pearland. and as you know we have emissions tests here. i will tell u that i passed emissions with aftermarket bassani w/hi flo cats and an x pipe. but other than that exhausts are a personal decision. i agree w/ alloy. listen to a bunch w/ different setups and find out what u like
If you want to hear some different exhaust combo's on some Mustang GT's, me and my two friends have different exhaust combo's. I have Shorties with an O/R H pipe and Pypes Violators axle backs. My next door neighbor has JBA Long Tubes, O/R H, 99-04 Flowmasters custom put on. My other friend has Hooker Long Tubes, O/R X, and Magnaflow Magnapacks axle backs.
Just cut them off and have some pipes and tips welded on to save money.Cost about 100 bucks, thats what I did.
