AOD upgrade - Question

I've gotten almost everything I need - I just have a question about flexplates. I know I need the 164tooth - 50oz for my 1989 351W.

My engine has 1 piece main seal not two. But every 50oz 164tooth flexplate I find is for a 2 piece rear seal not the 1. Are they talking about the same seal? Do I need a 1 piece or two? Just a little confused as what I need for my application

You need a flexplate that matches the original balance of your engine. All 351's are 28oz balance, so you'll need a 164 tooth, 28oz flexplate. I don't think the rear seal has anything to do with the type of flexplate

one more thing, the engine doesn't care how many teeth are on the flexplate. The flexplate style (except for the 28 or 50 oz deal) depends on the trasmission and torque converter. I'm no AOD expert, they may all use the same 164 tooth count and same torque converter bolt pattern for all I know. C4's do not, they can have different tooth counts and bolt patterns.

I came super close to just droppin back in a C4 - but after I looked at the difference in price (for me) the better choice was to upgrade to the AOD. From what I hear, I will be more than happy. When I got my car the first thing I did was junk everything and start over - so I'm sure I'll be happy when I'm done.

As long as your upgrading to AOD, check out a 4R70W.
Yes it is, electronically controlled, and a controler like a Baumannator TCS will be needed, at extra cost to the install. The good news is; a 4R70W(part of AOD family), is more readily available(use one from 98 V-6 Mustang), already has most improvments needed by an AOD(no extra cost), and the wide ratio gear set, is a huge performance advantage.
Check out the links.

If nothing else you'll have more info on which AOD to get.

I'm finally starting my install today, Baumannator install will go first, next week the tranny will go in...PULEEASE, no unforseen insurmountables!!

AOD Upgrade question- In answer to your question, the best way to upgrade an AOD, is by putting in a t5. Thank you.
