Someone might have used a sensor as a plug or relocated a sensor. Does your stock gauge function? Do you have an aftermarket temp gauge?

The stock gauge's sender is on the front driver's side of the lower.
The ECT (for the EEC) is on the front passenger side of the engine.

Coolant flow at the back of the intake can be compromised. I would simply look for the stock gauge sender and ECT in their stock locations. If you have those and you don't have an aftermarket gauge or electric fan, that sensor is probably left over from a PO's modifications.

When i installed my autometer temp gauge in the stock location, i moved my factory one to the rear of the intake just to keep it functional (backup if anything).

It reads slightly cooler, but at least it's not a dead gauge. I personally am not a fan of cars with aftermarket gauges and the factory gauges all sitting on 0 when the car is running.
