Is there a way to fix the burnt circuit? I think I remember seeing a picture where someone had soldered a wire in there. Is this a dependable fix? What gauge of wire should be used, etc.?
The wire is the easiest fix. It would take a steady handed person to try and actually solder a trace on a board. Its only as dependable as the person doing the fix. If the connections are good, it should last.
20-22 guage works fine. Thats what Ive used in the Past. You also need to verify that the ECM wont fry again. A certain amount of test need to be done on the Main ECM harness to make sure. If the voltage is not gone, it will just fry in another spot.

I have fixed many printed circuit boards, and this is what you need: 1.) 30 gauge wire Radio Shack #278-503. 2.) Use some gel type super glue to hold the wire in place after you have completed the rework. 3.) Fine gauge rosin core solder. Radio Shack #64-009 4.) Use a low wattage fine point pencil type soldering iron, Weller SL 335 or equal (35 watt, 800 degree max temp) Radio Shack carries some Weller soldering irons, and the WP 35 is the best match. Weller tools are very good but somewhat expensive. If you are the type of guy who buys good tools and doesn't complain about the price, this is your best choice. If all you are going to do is an occasional repair, Radio Shack's 40 watt iron model #64-2071 would probably be OK.
