i went out and got a quote today for a 31 spline setup at a local diff shop... and he quoted me 1400 for 31 spline "daves racing" axles, 31 spline eaton posi and some weird brand 3:73's... he told me that the gears that he uses he has been using for the last 6 years with no returns.. he also told me that it carrys a 2 year warrenty for whining and breakage... does that sound like a good deal? oh and he also said that he would hot tank my axle and weld it all up to 1000HP+ specs and paint it...
A very well known Ford guy is charging me $500 for the FRPP gears, fluids, and labor. I asked if he can throw in my 31 spline things in since the stock things are out, and he said no charge. So For $500 + $267 for 31 spline Moser axles + $70 to ship to Hawaii + $300 for a used Eaton = ~$1100. I think you'll be better off if you buy your own axles, and posi, then have some shop install it all.
1000hp+ specs would include a ladder frame. Sounds like the shop is either A) professional race shop, or B) trying to make lots of money offa you I got all my parts for $520 (alloy usa axles, 31spline trac-lok diff, master rebuild kit, 3.73 frpp gears, and diff rebuild kit) by shopping around. I've been quoted $150 from a buddy who works at a dealership, free from another buddy who works at another dealership, and $400 or so from all the "performance" shops. I'm just gonna put it together myself when I get the time, but if thats not an option for you i suggest shopping around for places on install labor, then buy all the parts yourself.
is it really that hard to install gears at home?? i have heard horror stories before.. i'm no idiot when it comes to mechanics.. but gears scare me..
If you know how to use the tools (caliper, dial indicator, and torque wrench) then it's easy - if you're unsure on how things work or don't know what something in the rear end is, not so easy.
i'm going to try it... i dont want to spend over a G for my rear end... is there some sort of a walkthough that i can look at?
If you need a walkthrough then you shouldnt be doing it on your own... pay the money and have it done by someone who knows what he is doing
i'm sure i could tackle it... i just like to see walkthoughs.. when i did my PI swap i read though everything that i could find and it turned out great!.. ive taken out my trac lok 2 times to rebuild and everytime it turned out great...
