Is this a crazy idea or would it work (shaker hood conversion)?

I have an RPM Air Gap and a 3 inch K&N Extreme Air lid assembly. Hood clearance from the top of the air cleaner to the hood is less than 1/2 inch.

So here is my idea. I get the alum shaker hood scoop and rubber seal from NPD.
I bolt the shaker scoop to the K&N lid and have a body shop cut the hood. I can raise the shaker assembly as needed to make a seal with the hood with a carb spacer or air cleaner riser.

Would it work? I don't see why not. A ram air shaker hood would certainly look cool as hell. Constructive comments are solicited.

I decided that the price is not justified. Instead, I can get a 429 Cougar Elminator hood scoop (Boss 429). I would cut a hole in the hood slightly smaller than the diameter of the filter and ring the hole with thick window lace. This would deliver air to the top plate filter without the cost of the shaker.

Yeah you solved your own problem there. I wanted to put a shaker on my car so bad also, problem is they run so much money it just isn't worth it. Plus with that intake manifold there is no way you are going to get it to fit. It is very hard to mod a car with a shaker, and keep that shaker. Too bad though since they are so bad ass.

I think without a soft rubber seal, you are going to have water leaking into your engine compartment. Also, with the scoop being open at all times, rain will be a problem getting sucked into the air cleaner.

I won't be driving in the rain and second, I bet a Harwood or Moroso hood scoop plug might seal it up enough to keep the rain out while I am driving frantically to a highway overpass to wait out a shower.

My scoop is open at all times. Rain is no problem. Just have to be careful with where I point the hose when washing the car.

I have the pro-flo efi which is a pretty tall single plane, and a 3" K and N filter.I figure that this combo still probably isn't any taller that the 428 cobra jets that had the shaker scoops, so maybe it would work. I just wondered if anybody on this website had any experience with a similer setup, as I don't usually trust seller supplied testimonials.

3. install a 1971 ram air rubber seal on my K&N lid (see picture)
4. install a Cougar Eliminator hood scoop

The seal in item 3 and which you see below will allow air to get to the K&N lid via the scook without the air pressure forcing air up and through the scoop. The seal is available at NPD. I think it is also the same as what the Boss 429 used.

i don't think the eliminator scoop is going to cover the 13" hole, i think 11" or maybe 12" is about all you can get away with. i could be wrong but but i know the eliminator scoop tapers down to a smaller width at some point. so i wuoldn't cut the hole until you get the scoop in hand, if you already have the scoop then i'll just sut the hell up. either way good luck and let us know how it turns out

according to the specs for this scoop on MDepot's web site, the scoop measures 26x21-25". For it to taper from 21 to 12 inches would mean that the angles would be steep but the lines seem pretty straight.

I added that scoop and cut a 13.5" dia hole in my hood so the 13" dia air cleaner can stick through. (The driver side motor mount is restrained to keep it from hitting the hood sides during hard launches.) I am thinking about going to the 68 1/2 ram air cleaner setup but the cost is high even for a reproduction set-up.

I like the idea of the rubber seal on the air cleaner. I really need to keep the incoming air cool because my engine runs ALOT better when it's cold. One of the reasons I thought about the shaker idea is that it might give me just a little more clearance under the hood AND it would keep the hot underhood air out of my engine. Your solution looks like it would do both as well. Good thinking.

This is a picture of the filter/hood clearence. There isn't any. Actually the filter is lifting the hood 5 mm in the back. Also, note that the filter nut is above the hoodline.

What I am unsure about your set up is whether you are actually getting any downward air flow through the hood at high speed. The way it has been explained to me by those purporting to know is that the air pressure under the hood at high speed would actually be forcing air up and through the scoop thereby negating the hole in the hood.

I haven't tried to block the scoop, to see if there is any preformance gain or loss, but anyways, the carb is sucking air, and you can actually hear it when driving. I've been thinking about some sort of sealer just to be sure.
What I do know, the scoop is venting out hot air when the engine is shut off.
When idling, the carburetor is sucking it in.

JerryS, you'll have the same problem I am having with the repo shaker and the Victor Jr intake on my 351W 69 Mach 1... that air cleaner (what air cleaner is that, by the way?) needs to be at the stock height for the seal to mate with the underside of the hood. If you're too high or too low, you don't have a seal. With the shaker, it is the same kind of pot luck, except instead of not sealing, you can't close the hood.
