My low coolant light has started to come on at times, but both the radiator and overflow are full. Where is the low coolant sensor located? Is it possible to clean the sensor and if yes, how? thanks for any responses and help.
If you take your overflow cap off, it is attached to it. The the long thing with two prongs at the end that dips about 12" into the tank. Here's the pics. Pardon the dirtyness. Neglected to clean the engine bay after a rainy drive through the mountains.
I had the same thing happen with mine. Light started to come on from time to time, then stayed on all of the time. I cleaned the sensor contacts shown in the photos above, with no luck. Fluid was always full. I picked up a used one at a local wrecker for $20, put it in, and works great. This is a common problem with these sensors, and I've heard of guys just soldering a wire from the two terminals of the sensor to turn the light off.
These are bad sensors if you ask me, Waiting to get my fluidyne so I don't have to worry about these things.
Huh? Having a Fluidyne will eliminate the use of a low coolant sensor? I'll tell you what, I was driving on the highway and my light came on. Never had before. So I pull into a gas station and low and behold! My radiator was about half empy of coolant and the reseviour was completely empty. My radiator had a crack in it. Had it not been for that light, I would have kept driving until my radiator was empty.. and when that happens, a blown head gasket isn't too far to follow!
Actually, with the crappy gauge in this car to begin with, you would only notice the higher temps when it was too late. And who stares at their temp gauge constantly? There really should have been a high temp dummy light, but as it stands there isn't. Now, if there are zero lights on in my instrument cluster and the check coolant light pops up, I'm more likely to see that than my temp guage barried in the red zone. And it only takes a few seconds in the red zone to cause the damage, then it's too late.

hey guys i have the same problem on my 2000 gt for some reason i cant see the pics of the overflow tank. this may sound stupid but where is the over flow? the only thing i see is the tank on top of the radiator with the cap. if thats what ya are talking about, mine doesnt have a 12' long thing that goes in there...
That is the coolant overflow. The 4.6l mustang uses a different type Of cooling system. You are better off asking in the 4.6 section where the sensor is. I owned an 03 gt, but that year ford felt it was more important to have a check gas cap light and ditched it
