Mutha Thumpr stage II install - cam lock outs

    Hello -
    I've decided on installing the M/Thumps stage II's .....as with my prev post ...I'd like to do this myself ...but ....I've been told by a reputable shop that has perofrmed many of these swaps....

    Not to use the Comp cams "phazers" ....use the Livernois lock-outs in-case the VCT goes bad....

    Plus that special tool from ford doesn't help to hold down the chains b/c you have to remove the gears to put the locks in....?

    Then the guy at the shop said that ....no matter what ...your going to have to "pop" the timing cover off anyway to be reassurred that the timing is correct.....if it's "off" by (1)one link or shifts in anyway....your really screwed.....(the marking the gear and chain is iffy) ...and it will end up w/motor faliure.....has anyone out there completed this procedure with really good results ....and completed this in their own garage.....

    That's BS! I've installed several sets of these cams and used the wedge. it gets stuffed down into the cover and wedges the both sides of the chain outward and just plain locks it in place. After that, you just remove the cam and sprocket. Of course, you do have to mark the chain and sprocket so that you get that back together in the same way it came off. PM me if you need any tools.

    And as far as phasers go, I believe the Livernois ones are spring loaded which keep them quiet compared to others.

    Thanks Anthony ....I had the feeling the guy was trying to scare the $hit of me so he could "drum-up" some business....I have downloaded the install directions on the ford hot cams....and then the Livernois directions as well...if I do install these ....can I run them for a while with out a tune?...(the guy said I definitely need one + a dyno?) and then another shop said eventually "do a tune" with more mods.......thanks for the heads up on the tools....maybe I can simply 'rent" them from you for a small fee ...and ship them back....I'm thinking I may go to my local Ford dealer ...they're pretty good here..ask for the best tech w/these mod motors ...(I'm friends w/a service manager) ...and ask him to assist me for the weekend on the install....I'm more a paint and body guy....although I have a 1971 351 windsor on the stand in my garage....on it's way to the machine shop....any suggestions would be much appreicated ...

    I am interested in this too because I have plan's on having this exact cam installed as well. My only question is would a custom canned tune (I think that's the right term) work for this? The reason I ask is because I would rather have Kenne Bell just send me a new one if possible.

    The more basic your car is right now, the better an emailed tune will be. If you already have several other mods it makes the chance of an emailed tune working good less. Anytime you install any aftermarket cams you really should get a dyno tune from a pro. There's just too much little crap that needs attention in the tune.

    Judging by your sig you already have the KB. A canned tune is not going to work for your supercharger let alone for your supercharger + cams.

    Your right I do have the KB SC and like I said I did'nt know what it was called but my tune did come from KB on one of those hand held tuner's wich I thought was concidered a canned tune. If it is not then what do you call it.
