Hi all, been lurking the last couple days and figured I would introduce myself and talk about my new project. I'm Glenn, I live in Utah and the proud owner of a new project. Its a 65 Coupe that I picked up for the grand price of FREE! The previous owner started working on it, lost interest, and offered it to me. I got it home, and am now in the process of doing an inventory of the parts. First look shows a body with rust in the usual places, it will need new floorboards and firewall. The trunk looks solid, with some minor rust in the rear quarters. I haven't had a chance to look at the cowl vents, but I suspect there is rust there. Its got a 9" rear, from an unknown vehicle. It came with a 351W block, heads and crank. Once I get numbers, I'll have a better idea of what I have. C4 trans. The guy bought new replacement floorboards and a firewall, new hood and trunk lid, subframe connectors, and other stuff. I'm thinking restomod for this, with the 351, C4 (or AOD), and the 9". I may go with a Fox or MII front suspension, with 4 wheel disc brakes. So I will be coming here for advice and help as I start the teardown and build. I'll start posting pics this weekend (weather permitting). Now that I have got that out of the way, I hope to mine a lot of good info from here and other sites! Thanks! Glenn
welcome, and what an awesome deal...I paid $800 for a rolling shell(true, a 99% rust free shell, but still...)good luck and get some pictures up
Hi I am new too and welcome. You got a good deal being free more so since you also got a lot of new metal with it. I am in the process of doing a 67 coupe restomod so maybe we will end up swapping info.
Thanks for the welcome! I took a closer look at the body last night. Minor rust in the rear quarters, looks like an easy repair. The good news is from what I can tell the cowl area is completely rust free! Just some dirt and leaves in there. Looking up from under the dash, the vents look solid. The PO left me 2 sets of doors, and various sheet metal parts. I'm looking forward to getting into this, although it will be spring before I start the project. Got some home improvement stuff to get done first. Pictures to come soon!
Here are a few pics I took over the weekend. Showing mostly the exterior. I'll have to unload the parts before I can get some interior shots.
Me either. The PO had it for sale in the local classifieds, but didn't get any interest. I would ask every now and then if it had been sold, but I wasn't really interested until they called and said "come get it!" They are even going to let me borrow a rotisserie to make the bodywork go much easier!
Thats nice of them to let you use a rotisserie too. I wish I would have been able to to that back when I did the body work on mine.
welcome! my 65 is also a 351 car, and i can tell you this... plan on headers. mine are hedman elites, and fit really well. dont try to use 302-289 headers. as the difference in width, and deck height between the the smaller engines and a 351 will cause you ontold grief. also, if you decide on an aod, you will want the shorty headers...
Chromedog.. thanks for the tips. I do plan on a 351w/AOD setup. The PO gave me a set of long tube headers, I"m betting they were for the original 289 that was in the car. Its got a 9" already bolted up, not sure what gears are in it. I'm thinking either 3.55 or 3.73 when I'm ready for that part. Update: I got the dataplate over the weekend and decoded it. It originally was Whimbeldon White with red interior. 289 2V with a C4 auto with 2.80 rear. Got it covered over the weekend for winter hibernation. I'm gonna start on this in the spring when I have the garage cleaned out. In the meantime I'll be absorbing all tidbits and tips. lol
