back when i had an RSX it had I had a similer situation. i wanted to replace the stereo and the aftermarket metra and scoche dash kits were horrible. the type S has a molded unit while the base RSX had a standard single DIN radio which swapped out perfectly.

is there a chance i can get a picture from you earlier guys who had the single unit in the dash. trying to see whats different and if i want to spend the money to play with a unit like that. I do appreciate it if someone can.

another question.... is there any reinforcement behind it... like slider rails for the radio to sit on? mounting bracket that mounts behind it... or a cage build around the back end (just not part of the center dash?)

Yes there is a bracket that the cd player rests on and it is the stock center piece.

He posted pics of a 94-00 dash. Your 02's dash is different. Your install kit will be different too.

see, this is the issue i am having, yes the dash is different.. and that is why i think i am going to start checking junkyads for a earlier mustang to see if i cant get an older center panel. the larger opening on the 02-04 forces you to get either a metra or a scoche dash kit that is substantially subpar. so i think i am going to go ahead and dumpster dive and find me one that was posted above and replace mine with that. however i do think that i will neeed to figure out something for the replacement of the three butons at the bottom (TC, fogs, defrost)

couldn't you just buy an aftermarket 1.5 or Double DIN radio? I've seen a few nice ones.

Like in the first pic if you can figure out how to mount the buttons like I did with the nitrous controls you can make a panel and rap it in some fabric and my panel is just held on by velcroe or however you spell it and it works fine.

It is damn near impossible to do. Your quality of the retrofit will be much ****tier than the metra or scoche kit would be. Go ahead and get a dash kit and don't whine. It's the best way.

There is all sorts of **** behind there. The 94-00 is vastly different behind there too.

Buy 1.5din radios are more expensive than single din radios. In my opinion putting in a single din radio into a 1.5din slot looks cheap. If i were to replace my Mach 460 i would NEED to go 1.5 din.

Torinalth, your swap can be done but you'll need quite a few parts. The biggest obstacle is that there is NOTHING behind the Mach460 to mount a single din radio to. The Mach 460 bolts in by 2 5mm bolts in the front and that's it. If you replace the trim, there is nothing to secure the single din radio to.

On top of that, you'll need to purchase the shifter trim and gauge surround trim to relocate the traction control and defroster. The 94-00 defrost button is located under the headlight switch (don't ask me why) and the 99-00 traction control is next to the shifter.

For the fog lights, you'll need a new center console from a 94-00 to make it look factory, otherwise you gotta put a toggle somewhere.

Not to mention not all these interior parts over the years were the same color. If you have dark charcoal, you are limited to only 99-00 parts.

i already ahve the aftermarket kit, and its worthless, ugly, and flimsy. this is why i am looking into other alternatives, because HAVE already gone through that way. so NO its NOT the best way.

as far as being vastly different i'm willing to take the chance and working on it to make it how it needs to be.

I have not seen a 1.5 that i like, and all the double din units i am interested run in the 900+ range, which really does not appeal to me.

I am not too worried about the buttons for fogs (dont work), TC, and defrost. but i do understand the issue with the mounting setup. when i can find a place that has the year i need i'm going to pull it all apart and see what needs to be swapped over to give the security needed for the radio.

color is really not an issue with me, as i will be painting some of the interior panels anyhow, and this one will be among them. my only real concern, which i dont think will be an issue, is the mounting points for the older trim, if its the same as the new trim. i think it should be fine, but guess i wont know till i get my hands on another.

Unfortunately i don't think they do. The newer trim snaps in place using 4 push-in style clips, while the older 94-00 peice used part of the radio support to mount as you need to take the radio out first to remove it. The newer trim can come out without having to yank the radio.

Then you still have the problem of supporting the din side radio in the newer opening as there is nothing there to support such a style.

You being stubborn is going to cause yourself a lot of headaches trying to do this swap, but you're so encased in your own thoughts to listen.
