Question on cam/ thrust bearing

On my 347 build I'm finally to the point to put the timing set on. When I bought the engine it came with a cam retainer with hex bolts in the front. Now that I have broken the bearing behind the Summit performance timing set I'll ask the question. 1. Is the retainer suppose to be cut out to fit the bearing in or is the bearing/timing set supposed to ride on the face of the retainer. The smaller headed bolts that came with the kit are not long enough to even get started into the block, so I used the hex bolts, bad idea.

2. They say I have to buy an entire new set to get the bearing, does anyone make a bearing that will fit in the back of the timing set. Any
suggestions. Thanks.

Crank in--pistons in-rings filed etc. Cam in and did a degree timing last weekend before everything went to dog s***. May get pictures some day.
