Hey all. My car is an 07 GT/CS Vert. Mods include Full Roush Stage 2 suspension, Roush LCA's, Roush Big Brake upgrade, HID's, Ford GT Start Button, Pioneer AVIC-D3 Head Unit. I am getting close to thinking about going down the Supercharger route, but I have a couple of questions, and something of a dilemma. My initial thought is to just continue along the Roush route and buy the polished 445 BHP kit from Stage3. (My car is an Auto, so the TVS isn't really an option) However, I'm a little curious about the figures quoted for it. From what I understand, this is the same blower that was producing 415 BHP 418 ft Ilbs torque, that they have now added a smaller pulley and new tune to, and it is now producing 445 bhp but still 418 ft Ibs torque. Why has the torque figure not increased in line with the bhp figure? The other option that is appealing to me is the Magnuson Magna Charger 5th Generation MP112 which stage3 are doing a superb deal on. On this blower they quote increases in excess of 140 bhp and the same again for torque (although on Magna's web site they claim 125/125) so I will effectively end up with somewhere between 425 -440 bhp, and 450 - 465 ft Ilbs torque. (All figures quoted at crank) I have been told many times over the years that bhp is someting of a mythical number and that it is TORQUE that gives you that shove in the back, so understandably I'm finding the Magna's torque figures (and price) extremely appealing. What do I do? One final question, are any of you running the Magna, and if so what do you think of it/what sort of numbers have you seen with it? Thanks guys, Andy
Why aren't you looking at the TVS? And the magnacharger is only good if you don't plan on building further from that. A whipple, kenne belle, or saleen s/c will all get you to that 500rwhp mark and similar tq numbers. Of course, you can run a larger pulley and make less power but you would have the ability to turn it up if you wanted to. The reason that it did not increase in TQ numbers is because they tuned for max HP because it looks good on a dyno. You want your tuner to tune for the absolute flattest torque curve possible so that you always have that kick in the back when you floor it. I have a Whipple s/c (intercooled) and am making 475rwhp 465ft-lbs of tq. Extremely driveable and extremely nice. No issues at all and when I build my motor I'll be able to get very close to 600rwhp on pump gas if not higher and race gas probably 650 or so. I want to add that the magnacharger is a GREAT supecharger but only if you do not want to build off of it. If you know for sure you are going to be content at the 425rwhp mark, then get that. But if you ever want to make more power, get a whipple, kenne belle, or saleen.
Hey there. The reason I have discounted the TVS is mainly because my car is an auto. Also, I really have no intention of building a bottom end, so I'm looking for something that will work well with the stock internals and transmission. I love the idea of a Whipple, Kenne Bell, Saleen or TVS, but given the fact that my car is a street cruiser and will never be put on the track or strip, the Magnuson seems really appealing. I can only go by their quoted figures, but it does seem to make more torque relative to BHP than the others, which is why I ask if anyone is actually running it. Also, the purchase price is a factor, so I guess it comes down to 'bang for buck'. Andy.
If purchase price is a factor, be sure to factor in the fuel consumption increase. In my experience it's dramatic - especially around town. Some will tell you that it's not that bad if you stay out of the boost, but if you're always going to be avoiding the boost, why bother installing it? I'm not a fan of nitrous but I could see the appeal of a well installed premium kit with remote opener etc that you could use on occasion and still have fuel mileage for everyday driving. Another option would be lots of gear (at least 4.10's) with CAI and a good tune. Gives you much better performance around town with some fuel economy loss on the highway. Depending on your driving mix, could be a good tradeoff and much cheaper than F/I. Having said all that, I went with a Whipple HO and love it.
I have an auto too, but with a Vortech @10 lbs. of boost and 4:10's...I love the current combo I have....very streetable for around town, as this is my daily driver in nice weather, and it screams as the rpms go above 4,000 or so..And with 4:10 gears it takes no time at all to get to 10 lbs. of boost in my car in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear..Whatever you do, get custom dyno tune from a very reputable tuner...My advice would be dont do anything till you drive a few cars with different combo's, then make ur decision..my current numbers are 417 whp and 380 wtq on a Mustang dyno..this was before an O/R Xpipe and HTO plugs 1 range colder with the right gapping...
Just installed the Kenne Bell 2.6L (intercooled) today. Well, actually I took my time and spread it over three days. But I could not get the grin off my face, nor the grins on my sons faces when we finally mashed the throttle. At 10 psi I'm not too concerned about the stock block giving out. And if it did, that'd be just the kind of ammunition I'd need to convince my wife I need a new motor. Then I'd turn up the wick on the SC.
I have a Magnacharger I got from Steeda. Steeda dyno tuned the car for me and the car put down 397hp/382tq to the rear wheel. Thats with no other mods. They figured it is about 455 hp at the crank. I get 24 mpg on highway and 17 in town. I hope this helps you.
That is a great help, thank you. Those are terrific numbers, much better than I expected. So I take it Steeda did a custom tune rather than using the tune that came in the box?
calispecial, if you live near steeda, i would have dyno tune it for. if you don't i'm sure theres probably a reputable tuner in your area that can do the same thing. good luck with everything, keep us posted.
He lives in England...... Anywayz, if you want to be safe and you don't plan on making like 700 HP you could always go with a Saleen... There are a bunch of tuners that install and tune them everyday. You can get a mail order tune that is better than a lot of Dyno tunes that are made by usless tuners. Its still not as good as a Dyno tune but damn close. If I were you I'd go with a Saleen kit from a reputable tuner. (One start with a b and ends in speed the other is three letters and starts with a J ) PM if you need specifics as I don't think either are sponsored vendors here.
Cali, get the magnacharger or a vortech. Those are your best bets. Personally, a Twin Screw (TS) will be more street fun than a centri IMO. I've driven both and the instant tq of a TS is absolutely amazing. Since you live overseas, I would contact either JDM (they sell saleen s/c's), or Eric Brooks (owner/admin of ModularFords) about tuning. Eric does some great email tuning. If you have access to a dyno, that's even better as you can make a pull, get the datalog from that pull, email him, and he will email you an updated tune. Rinse/repeat that process until it's perfect and you will have a perfectly good custom tune. JDM sells saleen s/c's but they tune anything (for a price obviously haha). Make sure you think about getting gauges with your s/c purchase. My opinion is Fuel Pressure, Wideband A/F, and maybe boost if you care about that sort of thing. I like the boost gauge, but it's not necessary. Fuel Pressure and Wideband a/f definitely IS necessary.
I have a MagnaCharger and all I can say is, wow. I have been in cars with whipples and Roush blowers and while they have more top end they don't near the down low pull the 112 has. The grunt of the MagnaCharger is unreal. Ok now that my comments sound they were written by a 5 year old I will leave it at that and say the MagnaCharger and if you need more HP up top then buy a water/meth kit and get a killer tune. Just my $.02
So I just put a magnacharger in and while I'm a little disappointed with the hp #'s (341 rwhp) the pull I get when I give it just a little tap is enough to make me giggle like a little girl. I have no intention of having a trailer queen and drive my car as an almost daily driver and usually see around 17 mpg around town - and that's with having too much fun with it. I think the best way to describe it would be that I turn the radio down and open the windows when I'm on a highway onramp and I always have a huge smile when I hi the speed limit Pics if anyone is interested after I get the intake back from paint - hot pink to match the stripes.
Thanks everyone for your advice and comments. What you say here is definitely why I shortlisted the Magnacharger in the first place. Although the BHP figures aren't spectacular, the torque figures ar better than most, and in real world driving I think that is way more important. Also, I definitely want to go with a twin screw rather than centri, again, for that bottom end grunt. I think the Magna is the way to go (for me) but I will definitely be having a chat with JDM before I come to a firm decision. Andy.
