+1. I love the staggered look. I kinda liked your original idea of getting taller tires out back. Good for that tough, old-school retro look.
I am leaning toward going with a set of American Racing Shelby Torque Thruster M (Chrome) 18X9 and 18X10 Nitto 255/45-18 fronts Nitto 295/45-18 rears I running a Saleen SC so I like the idea of a meater/taller tire on the rear for more traction. You could actualy go all the way up 305/45-18 and still have plenty of clearance even if you have dropped the rear end 1-2 ins. BY the way 285 nitto's are 285/40 not 285/45. The 285/40 is almost identical in height to the 255/45. That's the way most packages are going with those tire sizes to keep the over all tire height the same front and back. What ever you choose,I'm sure will look great on you car.
It will look tough as several of the Roush models run 275/40-18 on 18x10s at all four corners. Look forward to seeing the pics of yours when they come in
I ran that set-up a couple of years ago with AR TT-M anthracite DD wheels with same size Nittos you listed.
Running a taller tire, either in the back or in the front, will mess with the ABS and traction control systems, as the computer will believe the taller corners are going faster than the others. I'm not sure how bad the issue is, but I've always been told to avoid it. I plan on going with 18x9.5 wheels and 285's all around. Dan
I don't know to what extreme the above statement refers to, but OEM tires from brand new to worn out can be about .25" difference depending on the overall tread depth when new.
That's unfounded. I never had any issues or computer faults. I had it serviced at the dealership during this period and all systems checked out good.The only issue was the speedo was off a couple of mph on the + side.
True, but 255/45/18 to 295/45/18 is a 1 2/5" difference in total height. Like I said, I don't know what the end effect truly is. That is a 5% difference in tire circumference from front to back. That may simply be within the factory limits, or perhaps the computer "learns" that the tires sizes are different and compensates. I don't know. It's certainly not unfounded though, the wheels are traveling at different speeds, and the computer knows this through the ABS sensors (which are also used for traction control, IIRC). Dan
well my stang as many others with s-197's running staggered tires sizes haven't fail yet. I've run 17's,18's and 20 staggered set-ups and never had any issues reguarding ABS, sensor pressure or traction control problems.Those little idiot lights would surely flash. The computer will accept faults and dictate issues. For example my 06' Freestyle dictate a fault when the front wheels/tires slip on the ice.The little light flashes and I reset it to clear the fault.
Is the resetting process as simple as hitting a button/resetting the battery? Sorry, I have no experience with the new Fords. I'm not trying to make smartass comments or anything.
i haven't had any problems running a 26 inch tire up front and a 28 out back. looks mean as hell and gets alot of attention. i'm sure most of us drive with traction control off anyway. haha.
I ran that staggered set-up for almost a year.I never had a fault or traction control issues.There are many s-197's running staggered set-up's with 305/45/18's out back which a little taller. You really only have to reset if you don't run the tire sensors and it won't make your car quit or fall off the earth.That doesn't require anything more that resetting the button on your dash. I could post at least 6 other stangs running staggered (littles and bigs) and they have no problems,thats why I did it. Just run them fatties.
