My best guess would be that Ford just puts a tune in the pcm for daily driving with average performance. When you install a canned performance tune the guy that designs that tune is pushing the limits with ignition timing and such to get the most performance out of it. I would think that alone could push things out of center a bit. I don't know for sure, that's one thing I do not get into. Doug is known for supplying some kick a$$ tunes and he obviously knows what he's doing. There's plenty of guys out there tuning these cars, but he's one of the best a creating a good base file.
iskwezm, i did contact your friend but im just not willing to drive 2 hours to pay 600 for him to tune it, he wouldnt even make any deals with a cai with a tune
No question about Doug's tunes..In fact, I just recently had my 93 race tune checked by another local tuner, and not only did he confirm that my air/fuel was spot on at 12.4 WOT, but also confimed that I'd be wasting my money, if I upgraded to his custom dyno tunes, because in his opinion ? they wouldn't provide any further power gains, than what I already have..So as far as I'm concerned ? Doug's tunes are just as good, as an actual custom dyno tune..
Canned is going to be pig rich. They don't want to risk blowing a motor through the mail. A custom tune will have near perfect A/F ratio (assuming the tuner knows what he is doing) and will yield quite a bit more hp. Case-in-point. My friend with LT's, O/R H, CMCV deletes, CAI, canned tune put 287/295 to the ground. Got a custom tune from a guy here in houston (DynoJoe) and is now putting 316/323 to the ground. It's a big difference.
