Wheel width question

I know I've seen this on here before, but after searching, i couldnt find it, so I'll ask it again. (sorry)

I'm looking at getting some new wheels, and I would like to get atleast 17x9.

Question is, will the stock tire fit on a 9" wide wheel. I'm thinking it won't, but i figured I'd give it a shot anyways.

Why would you want a wider wheel for the same size tire?

I can't find the wheel that I want in an 8" wide wheel. Smallest I can find is 9", and I hate to spend the extra $$$ right now on new tires if I dont need to.
