Will 4 cyl auto trans from 92 work in 88?

My first guess is that it will not directly work.

It will bolt in and fit perfectly, but, I beleive the 92 has a 3 solenoid valvebody, and the 88 only has 2.

If you look at the electrical wiring plugs on both tranny's they should be different.

You may be able to swap valvebody's though, not sure.
I did swap a 90 trans into my 89. Both were 2 solenoid units.

I put a 90 tranny (A4LD) in my 91. The 90 only has one solenoid and the 91 has 2 so you have to get the 3wire plug with the newer tranny and wire it up to the harness. You lose the torque converter lockup solenoid (which the older car doesn't know about anyway which will affect fuel economy somewhat at highway speed - from what I understand it's only actuated in Overdrive) but other than that the trannys are the same. Check the Chiltons manual for the wire colors but it should be an easy swap.

Oh yeah. Wear clothes that you don't like because you'll get tranny fluid everywhere!!!
