shifting issue

hey guys quick question:

I have a tremec 3550 tranny with a Hurst shifter.

I've noticed that every once in a while (like once a week maybe), I'll be cruising around in, say, fourth gear. Well, when I come to a stop light I just pop it in neutral and coast to the light. Then, when I try to put it in first it just won't go. The only way it'll go back into first is if I shift back into fourth and then run through the gears until I get back into first...then it works fine. The clutch cable is good. The pedal engages at about the halfway point. Clutch doesn't slip. Tranny doesn't really make any strange noises. Fluid was good as well.

I took the engine and trans out the car last night (rebuild for the engine) so I'm hoping that maybe it was just some kind of an alignment problem or something. Or maybe the hurst shifter is just going out on me?

Any ideas?

also, I don't know what kind of atf was in the tranny before...but I'm gonna switch it out to that gm sync mesh stuff. It is ok to do that right?

ive noticed this in a lot of stick cars i have driven, including my car. i think that sometimes when you stop, the gears just dont line up (thats the simple way of putting it). i solve it like you and just put it into another gear then it slides into first. never thought it was a big deal

I did a good amount of research about what to put in my Tremec and I found that some say to start with ATF and then switch to Synchromesh. But I believe I contacted Tremec and they said I'd be better off using Synchromesh right from the start. That's what I did and 7000 miles later I have no problems. So I'd say definitely switch to the GM stuff.

+1 When I called up Walt at Promotion to get a clutch setup, i asked him about what I can do to my T3550. I ended up getting a TKO input shaft which is 26spline, new synch rings, new o-rings for the shift arm, and without a doubt he said get the synchromesh.

I had a hurst shifter on my tko which is very similar to your 3550 and it had a issue with 3rd gear doing something like that but when I put the triax on it I never had the problem again. I made sure the stops were set correctly on the hurst and I could never get it right.
