Hey guys, i need some help.I have a 1985 mustang 302, has a E303 cam, hydr lifters and non-adjustable rocker arms.Couple weeks ago there was a ticking sound, so my guess it was a lifter, so i put new lifters in and it didnt fix the problem.i took the valve covers of and noticed that i can spin the push rods with my fingers, so i re-torqued them and they where all tight and still can spin them. the motor has been rebuilt a year ago, it was done before i got the car. Any help? THANKS

make sure when you put the lifters in that the bleeder hole is facing up.

Do u have any idea what could be causing the ticking sound.. could it be the oil that im using?and when i put the lifters in i didnt pay attention which way the bleeder holes was facing, is it bad if there facing down?

Not really. are they stock valve covers? Are they stock rockers? i dont think that it's bad as in gonna hurt the engine bad. When it does the ticking sound is it running or not? From what i was always told the holes are suppose too face up so that it lets the air bleed out of the lifters when you shut the engine off. Have u ever heard a car making a tapping noise/ticking noise for a couple mins after the the motor was shut off?Almost like when something is really hot and cools down really quick.

The other thing i was thinking about was if there not the stock valve covers or lifters than maybe the rockers are hitting the oil baffle or maybe there hitting the valve cover itself. I highly doubt that its the oil....

I checked the clearance on the valve covers today, i pulled both off and started the car, still same sound. it does it with the car running and it changes with the rpms. i dont know if whoever put the cam in did something wrong. im getting to the point where im tired of fooling with it.

When i first got my t top car It was all stock except for a vortech a trim. So i toof off the mechanical fan and put on an electric one. Not long after that it started to have a tapping/knocking noise that really sounded more like a rod bearing knock!!

CRAP! JUST WONDERFUL!!!!
So a friend of mine(the guy i bought the car from) asked me what i used for the water pump pulley bolts and i told him the stock ones. He said that you have to use washers because they go the whole way through the pulley and hit on the casting on the back of the punp, making a tapping noise. Sounded right so i put washers behind the bolts and GUESS WHAT HAPPENED? ??? I started it up and the tapping was still there!!!!!

So i got to looking at the belt and noticed that the tensioner was jumping up and down a lil bit and thought that was it. So i replaced it and guess what!! Nothing tapping was still there!

So now im pissed and kinda worried that maybe it was a rod bearing so i changed the oil to kinda prolong the inevitable and just said to hell with it and DRIVE IT TIL IT BLOWS!!!

So i go to start it and take it for maybe one of her last rides and right as it starts to turn over i hear this TING TING noise!! WTH now what! Shut it off and pop the hood and look down and theres a three inch bolt laying on the ground! Looks like a pulley bolt!

Well it was a pulley bolt! Crank pulley bolt! Because of the blower its got two crank pulleys, stock one inside of the vortech one and they give you longer bolts to accommodate. Well one bolt fell out and the other two were a little loose so evwrytime the pulley would go around the part that was the loosest would lift off the balancer and slam back down on causing what sounded like a rod knock!! Tightened them all back up and NO KNOCK!!!

SOMETIMES WHEN YOU THINK YOUR NEVER GONNA FIGURE IT OUT, YOUR BOLT FALLS OUT AND GIVES YOU A SIGN FROM CAR HEAVEN!!!! jus stick with it you will figure it out!

Could be anything really! If its an automatic maybe a torque converter bolt worked its way out a little and its hitting the block Plate? Mybe its not to do with the cam or lifters or rocker at all?.........
