Lol, he's not talking about thump in the sense of bass. He's talking about a sudden "surge" of sound that comes on when an amplifier turns on after the head unit. As for the original issue, are you 100% certain there isn't an aftermarket amplifier somewhere in there? It would be very unusual...

Well based on pictures I found to compare it to, I would say I have the stock shifter. I'm likely going to try cleaning the threads on both the knob and shifter. All I need is about a quarter turn more but no way it's going to do that without me breaking something...

Good call on the shifter being replaced. I didn't even consider that. It has had a few minor mods done to it so it's definitely possible. I'll have to pull off the boot and take a look. For tightening it, did you do it by hand or use pliers?

Anything is possible but it sure looks identical to the factory limited edition knob. Does the factory knob have anything inside it, like a plastic adjuster or anything like that? I am wondering if a previous owner took something out of it making it so that it screws down too far.

Yep, same as above. Back in the mid nineties I had installed a 4 channel amp under my passenger seat and a single channel sub amplifier under my driver seat in my 88 notch. Great spot to hide them and so easy to install if you take off the seats first.

In the most simple sense, yes this is easily achievable. All you need is an aftermarket deck that has RCA outs and an adapter to connect your deck to the factory wiring. Then your deck will play through the factory amp and speakers. Then you'd run RCAs from the deck to where you wish to...

The changes between those two years seem pretty minimal. If it was me, I'd get the deal on the '12 and have some extra money to do a few tweaks myself. That being said, the bonus of the factory items is the warranty that goes with it. Ultimately it comes down to what's comfortable for you.
