Airbags still in a used car?

I'm buying a used Mustang, but I would like to know if there is a reasonable way to tell if the bags are still there and functional. I think the airbag warning from the computer can be eliminated. So what should I do? Any suggestions?

carfax report, if the bags went off I am pretty sure by law they have to tell you..

likewise, if they willing sell the car and the airbags dont work, and they are aware of this issue, it is illegal.

Sit in the driver's seat with the car runnin and have a friend hit the front bumper with a sledge hammer. If you end up with a broken nose, then your airbag was functional.

OR

You should be able to pull the cover off and see if the squib has been fired off. Just make sure you disconnect the battery first and ground yourself so you don't give it some static motivation to blow your fingertips off.
