Drivetrain AOD trans help

I have a 40 Ford with a 5.0 HO and AOD trans in it . I just bought this car and it has a 1985 Mustang floor shifter in it which is cable connected. My question is can I use a different year Mustang floor shifter? I prefer not to use a Lokar or B&M although I like them I don't want to take the trans apart to change the shift lever.
