my 5.0 blows smoke. i've never noticed it before but i have been told twice (under heavy acceleration) it is blowing smoke. this is probably either a gasket or a ring.... correct? if i do a compression test on it myself will this determine for me if it's a big problem? the car still runs hard.

also about the compression test. is there a link to the exact steps on doing this. ie. what order and how hard the plugs shoudl be torqued back in etc.

if ur at high rpm's (accel) its ur rings. u can check ur spark plugs to see if any oil is getting in there. if ur spark plugs are all clean, then the smoke is not smoke, its vapor (unburned gas). plus u know its burning oil if the smoke is blue. hope this helps

a wet and dry compression test would help, but a leakdown test it better.

good stuff from custom.
custom, what part of Seattle are you in?

I would say if the compression check is good, then its probably your valve guide seal or PCV valve. I just wen t through the same issue

hence the reason for doing wet and dry test. :)
