The differential is shot in my 98gt. Can I just put a new one in? Does the pinion depth need to be reset?

You do not have to remove the pinion gear to remove the posi itself(the trac-loc unit)...so you shouldn't have to adjust pinion depth.

You will (amongst other things) have to xfer your old ring gear to your new posi and have to set-up the backlash again, as well as shimming.

There's a lot more involved than just swapping out the posi unit.

Yes, if you are reusing the original gear and pinion, you PROBABLY won't have to reset the pinion depth, but NEVER assume ANYTHING any time that you R&R the carrier!

ALWAYS check the pattern and the backlash and set it up correctly. Have shims on hand and be prepared to set up whatever is in need.

to add to this, make sure you mark the carrier shims and caps to make sure they go back in on the same side..

It SHOULD go without saying that shims and caps should go back where they were. THEN you can check pattern and backlash.

It's not good enough to get the caps back on the same side, they MUST go back into exactly the same position. It is best practice to mark the caps position and the case with punch marks to ensure that they go back exactly as they came apart. This is done exactly the same way as are main and rod bearing caps in an engine.
