Scratched Up Piston

Finally pulled the heads off to address my oil burning issue and piston #8 looks like this. Need a new piston or can this one be fixed?

What was loose in there? How do the head and valves look? If the bore is scored from the shrapnel that did this, you will need more than a new piston and three rings.
(I am putting money on a loose spark plug electrode.)

When I had my heads off last piston 8 was all marked up from some small piece of metal, I smoothed the worst of it....the cyl still seals fine and doesn't burn oil. With yours burning oil and dark exhaust valve it needs attention.

The previous owner who dropped the guide in there was an ASS, and now all that piston is good for is a Tray, hence AssTray...

I would not put this engine back together without a complete overhaul.
Burning oil, dropping valve's, piston damage combined with a questionable previous owner makes anything other than a complete rebuild a gamble. That is how cars get left to rot. You do a bunch of labor to fix something, then it's not right again and motivation is gone to do it again.
The heads should also get a valve job and repair.
