How to change brake pads

They might have thread locker in them I don't remember. I know my front right rotor is on there pretty good...the only rotor that hasn't gotten painted hi-temp silver over rust-prone areas because the damn bolt is seized in there so well. Just use a lot of torque w/ a breaker bar or something and it'll hopefully let loose eventually.

I am having trouble removing the 15mm bolts that hold the caliper bracket. I need to take it off to replace the rotors. Does any one know if there is threadlocker holding these in place? Or, are the left handed threads?
There absolutely is threadlocker on those bolts. I used a 3' breaker bar the first time and then I cleaned them and put antiseize on them instead. Heating the bolts melts the threadlocker and prevents stripped threads. Use a torch or even a soldering iron on the head of the bolt until you heat up the entire bolt. Then the bolt will turn much more easily.

There is a little threadlocker on there from the factory. They are normal-threads.

I usually don't need heat to do this, but i usually just put the closed box end of a 15mm cresent wrench on the bolt head and hit the end of the wrench with a hammer and "impact" the bolt to break it loose.

Works all the time, but if it's tough, use heat.

Today I did my brakes with the help from my friend. Front once are easy but to change rotor s I had to take out caliper bracket and that is no fun, was there so tight that PB Blaster didn't know much. Rear ones are big time PITA cause I didn't have tools to compress caliper but fighting for hours with needle nose pliars and using every ounce of strength we had and we did it .

A scale of 1-10 it is around 7. Picture comming soon

next time you do it, it will be a 2 or 3, cause you will remember doing it the first time and know what needs to be done.

I should show you more pics of my Big Brake Swap I did on my 90 TSi AWD... It literally took me all day to do the fronts cause I had to break apart the rotors to get them off.

this was a fun day

Ohh thats nothing :p

I have had 4x4 f-150 and expedition rotors that I had to hammer so hard that I broke the braking surface clean off the hub hat.. It takes me about 3-5 swings on a good day..

Everytime I mention this I have at least one guy say.. " DUDE mine just came right off in my hand" Yeah thats because you don't live in the northeast rust belt or you don't have a 4x4 model.

Expect to have to take them back apart soon and re-do the job. Usually when I do something for the first time I have to go back in and do it again sometimes more than once...

Also, did you lube the caliper slide pins? Did you bleed the fluid? How do the brakes feel, are they better?

Yes I did lube the caliper slide pins, I didn't bleed fluid cause don't know how :)
Brakes feels great and stop real good.

I am going to pay $ 49 for brake flush

I just did my front brakes this weekend. What a waste of my time. What took me 2 hours could have been done in 30 if I knew what I was doing going into it. Next time, I'll pay someone to do it. :nice:

Now, to get my new rear rotors and brake pads put on...

rear is PITA big time. Get a tool if not damn it's hard to turn that piston

OK, I used an electric heat gun to heat up the caliper braket bolts (no the caliper mounting bolts), then with a 15mm 6pt. socket on a breaker bar, it was easy to remove the bolts, I didn't want to use a torch to prevent warping anything due to excessive heat. The bolts were LOADED with threadlocker! After that I cleaned up the bolts, and reinstalled with a service removable loctite product. The rotors were only 1mm over minimum, so it looks like I'll need to order some new ones, instead of getting them turned. Only, the next time it should be easier to remove the caliper bracket bolts.

And I didn't have to break the rotor to get them off.

honestly, a brake job is one of the easiest things to do on a car if you know what youre doing. Mike, i definitly feel your pain with a whole rust belt thing. im sure it sucks. ive had a few cars in my bay from up north, and i wanted to just go home halfway through working on them. what sucks is on some Accords and Odysseys, the rotors have to be pressed on. that sucks balls.

Just now I got to work and one of my friend want to see how fast my car is so I take him on a ride. After short hard run I brake it and did u turn . I could smell something burning so I pulled over and saw my front both brakes was smoking. So I came back to work and let it sit., I touch my rotor with my finger and got burned. It was so hot that when I touch it with spit on my finger I could her the sound of burning.

What is wrong ? Did it locked up ? How can it burn and smoke like that .

Need help asap
