How can I tell if my car has an aftermarket camshaft? Aside from obviously tearing the engine apart?

-the whole story-

I bought an 02 GT and the dealer had no idea what he was selling, told me it was stock but i knew otherwise. So far i have discovered (with help from videos and things here:nice: )full magnaflow exhaust & x-pipe, unknown brand short throw shifter and 3.73 gears. I am wondering what else this car has done to it, possibly cam or ecu upgrades but my knownledge of cars runs out at this point.

Thanks in advance - Dave

Good job and congrats on your new car. To find out cams you have to open your engine but if your hear a big time lomp loup then you got some kind of cams. I am glad that you got a car that got few minor bolt on's

thanks. i love the car. its deffinatly not a big loopey cam but it has a healthy sounding uneven idle if you know what i mean. it just doesnt sound the same as my friends GT. a few fires will be normal and ill get a snappy one or a quick/slower one.. i doesnt sound like a miss and the car runs great, just wondering whats in it

If it is an 02 then you have TWO cams.

You can pull the passenger side valve cover and may be able to tell. Otherwise you could check for a chip in the PCM and find out who made it. Take it to a tuner and they may be able to get a ballpark figure of what is in it.

Check for evidence that the cam covers have been removed...ie - new gaskets, clean, etc...(otherwise, like mine, there's a decent amount of built up crud that quickly tells ya it's never been apart.)
ENJOY!

It's a magnaflow catted X pipe i don't know if its an offroad.

I doubt it has cams, my car sounds lopey but it has stock cams. Post a vid of it at idle and i bet we could tell you. It kinda looks to me like you have an after market automatic belt tensioner too, the stock ones tend to squeak after awhile of aluminum on steel vibrations/rubbing

That is a stock belt tensioner.

IMHO that car is mostly stock, no way would it have cams...

Someone would have to be pretty retarded to do cams before they even did intake, dampers, or catback.

yeah stock suspension for sure, the tensioner and belt are as well, just new.
it does have catback i just neglected to post that picture, everything else looks stock. I don't think it has aftermarket cams but possibly a tune. It has 3.90's. Thanks for the help :nice:

Before you said 3.73... How do you know the gear ratio? Did you spin the rear wheel one rev and count how many times the drive shaft rotated?

Car looks real nice :nice:

Lol. 4th Gear is 1:1 (according to a friend) so at 4000 RPMs in 4th we took the speedo reading and converted it using tire size, to find ratio, it came out wrong, somewhere between 73-90 around 3.82, so i watched the daily drive videos and its between 3.73-4.10. I guess : )

Offroad = no cats, therefor yours is not an offroad x pipe. Do you have a catback?

Kilgore, why would you suggest an air intake? I know it only shows marginal gains...do cams increase the effiency of the intake? Or by intake did you mean tb/plenum?

And it does look nice...except for the 4x4 look ;-)
I was not suggesting anything. The point I was trying to make is that I find it unlikely that the previous owner would have installed cams before pretty much anything else.

Well i have cams (mild) in my 99 GT and there is no loop (well i don't notice one) I bought the car and the owner said it had cams but he could not find the recipt but assured me it had cams. i took it to a tuner and he told me it was difinatley worked on (valve covers removed ) He told me he put a cam tune and the tune would only work if the GT had cams... and it did. Still wished i knew what type cams.
