Horespower Gain from just a tune??

Hi guys what type of horsepower gain would I see from just a stock SCT 93 octane tune with my stock airbox?? Im debating ordering a K&N kit but might wait a while if the horsepower gains aren't that great.


Also with the 93 octane tune what type of gas mileage are you guys seeing?

By "stock SCT tune" are you meaning a SCT tuner with their standard tunes and not a custom tune loaded on? You should be able to get at least 15 HP from a base 93 tune with stock air box.
I avg around 19-20 MPG and have gotten mid 20s on highway trips.

Yeah thats what I meant, a non custom tune. So the air intake combined with the tune probley wouldn't be a bad investment?:)
 
You should see 20+ RWHP from a good tune that is from a good tuner and no CAI( use stock airbox ). I have a JLT CAI that is considered to be the best CAI for making HP. It has won many of the CAI shootouts in magazines.

This past spring, I did some testing at the track with my JLT CAI and stock airbox with tunes from Doug @ Bamachips. After averaging the runs out, I ran a slightly lower E.T. and slightly higher MPH with the stock air box over the JLT CAI. The best E.T. and MPH the car has run to date was with the stock air box.

Personally, I would not waste the money on a CAI unless you like the looks of it. I would invest the money and buy the tuner from a reputable tuner...

Wow! this info may just save me from spending $600-$700 bucks! I jst assumed a cai was about the first mod you should do b/c of the relatively low cost and gain in hp.
 
Be sure to ask your tune supplier about other options (besides horsepower gains) available when customizing a tune. For example, you can have your tuner program the idle dashpot to close faster so you don't have that dreaded throttle hang effect when you take your foot off the gas. There are numerous other tweaks like this that can be added when a tune is altered.

Thanks for posting that! That is quite interesting:nice: Now is the JLT MAF you have larger than the OEM MAF? I've never seen, but does anybody make a larger MAF for the OEM hose?
 
What tgj posted means nothing, he took the average of his runs in which there are ALOT of other factors going into effect, especial when you are talkin about such slight differences. Facts are a larger starighter intake tube high flow filter and larger maf are going to make more hp and gain et over the stock airbox, period.

This is coming from a person with a tonne of mods, no power and crappy ETs. That is all I am going to respond to this clown with...
 
I have over 100 passes on the car. It will run 13.4x @ 102.xxx mph at the track I go to consistently. It doesn't matter if it has the JLT CAI or the stock airbox. It will run close to a 13.40 @ 102.6 MPH with stock air box, both of it's 13.39 passes were with the stock air box. It's best is with the JLT is 13.41 @ 102.5 MPH.

The car has not been able to break it's 13.39 with the JLT even with a lower DA. There is over 30 passes on this car with the JLT.

Like I have said in the past, it is kind of strange that I am the target for other bolt-on 2005+ GT's and Bullitts at the track I go to. I have the least bolt-ons but the fastest E.T. and MPH and I run the stock air box.

The Stock Air box averaged out to a 13.462 @ 102.637 MPH...

The best MPH the car has achieved with slicks is 102.955 and that was with the stock air box. The best MPH the car has achieved with slicks and the JLT CAI is 102.541.

The best ET the car has achieved is a 13.392 and that was with the stock air box in 2008. The best ET the car has achieved with the JLT CAI is a 13.410.

If the JLT made more power over the stock air box, I should see it in a MPH gain. I didn't see a MPH gain, a slight loss in fact...

I did see an approximate 1 - 1.5 MPH gain when I added the FRPP CMCV delete plates...
 
I've long said that the tune is where the power increase is coming from (25-30 rwhp) and the CAI is just eye candy with very minimal power gains (2-5 rwhp).

I used to have a JLT II CAI on my '07 GT automatic before the supercharger went on. With stock airbox, canned tune from Diablosport, 4.10's, and drag radials it went 13.40's @ 102+ mph consistently. Our local track is 250' above sea level with DA's in the 300-1000' range more often than not. Added the JLT II CAI and the car didn't go any faster through the traps, and the ET's improved about .05 at the most. IMO, .05 second isn't much to brag about, and I don't recommend any CAI's to anyone for performance gains - just as eye candy.

I ended up adding a big stall converter and replacing the CAI with a basic non-cooled Vortech V2 supercharger and run consistent 12.30's @ just shy of 112 mph. That's a full second and 10 mph faster through the traps from a $3700 blower and $500 converter.

4.) Did you note any changes in weather such as temp/DA/headwind?
5.) Where the coolant and oil temps kept consistent between runs?
6.) How long did you allow for cool downs?

Finally........did you talk to Doug about this?

1) All 60' except the first one were in the 1.8x range
2) 4000 RPM on all passes
3) Stick
4) DA changes and wind direction was noted. Really a non-factor, DA correcting the results doesn't change them. Over the course of the entire night, there was about a 250' change in DA, less than 40' between comparative runs( 1st CAI VS 1st Stock Airbox( SAB ), 2nd CAI VS 2nd SAB, and Final CAI VS Final SAB ).
5) Coolant Temp was 98 Degrees Celsius for all passes, oil temp was not monitored.
6) Not quite a half hour between runs. I would make a pass, pit the car, change the air box, tune the car, let it run 5 minutes to allow the tune to adjust, and then put the car back in the staging lanes.
7) Did not talk to Doug about it.
