First Snow

Well, today was the first significant snow that my Mustang has seen this winter. I drove about an hour away from home and back in the snow. It wasn't too bad, but my back tires are about bald, so I took my time and was very careful. I'm hoping to be getting a toyota 4x4 in the next week or so so that I can park the 'stang when the weather is bad, but I won't store it for the winter. For now I'm going to rotate the front tires that have good tread to the back, then I'll probably get some winter tires and put them on the stock rims. I'm hoping to get new bullit rims and do fat/skinnies in the summer.

My advice, either get some decent tires on your pony or get something else to drive in the snow. Sounds like you dodged a bullet driving in the snow with bald tires. Don't want to see either you or your pony get hurt.

my cars parked for winter, i always said i'd drive it sun snow rain ice etc. but new jersey drivers have proved twice to me that they cant drive in dry weather.

so i bought a 1993 bmw 325i for 200 bucks. :nice:

car sucks just as bad if not worse in this kind of weather as my mustang, but for 200 bucks id rather some moron hit this then my pride and joy.

Does anyone know if a tire company makes the "old school" type of snowy (even off brands)? Y'know, the type of tread you can stick your fist inbetween? These newer, very expensive, softer type tires wear out so fast (X-ice etc...), and the tread design doesn't inspire any confidence with me. I had no choice but to buy used ones @ 50% left. New 17" snowies is a $1100+ here in :canada:! TIA

Last night we got our secod snowfall, the first was a mere 3" but I got 18" in as many hours yesterday and last night. My Mustang isn't going anywhere in this kind of weather. You guys with out a choice about driving your stang, just watch out for the idiots.

I grew up in upstate NY, where they don't measure snow in inches, but in feet. My birthday is in February, so I literally learned to drive with over a foot of snow on the ground.

The Mustang really doesn't do that bad. Its definately better than my old '90 LX 5.0. I drove it all but 2 days last winter. I just don't like having to watch out for everyone else. As long as you don't try to stop, turn, or start too fast (I usually take off in 2nd gear in the 'stang in the snow)...then you should do just fine. But now that my car is lowered 1.5", ground clearance may be an issue.

Good tires are the main thing, and I've been looking into getting some Bridgestone Blizzaks for my stock wheels. They are pretty expensive, but the traction that they provide is second only to a good offroad truck tire (probably better in the snow).

But hopefully I'll be getting that toyota truck, and I won't have to drive the 'stang in bad weather.

Yeah, you guys got hammered.......

I really LOVE the snow. I live in Columbus, Ohio and its funny that we usually don't get much accumulation in or near the city. But if you drive 15 minutes in any direction outside of the outerbelt, there is over an inch on the ground.

In high school when we woke up to a good snowfall, we would say "time to make the donuts" :D

I love offroading in the snow....thats another reason that I'll be very happy if I get that beater toyota.....It'll be my winter transportation and play toy......:nice:

When I moved to Maui 21 years ago I remember saying.........."I will never have to scrape ice off my windshied ever again" !! LOL

Its true......so far. I did wake up at 6 AM to a killer thunder and lightning storm which 30 minutes later produced a hail storm!! In Hawaii.......so weird. It was painfull to hear the stang get pounded. Thankfully no damage.

I've had very good luck with the Blizzaks. They don't make the kind you're referring to anymore, as far as I know. Probably because they're not as good as you would think.

This is my 2nd winter with the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 snow tires. I put about 5,000-6,000 miles on them last winter. They look BRAND NEW. I don't know how you drive, but...I expect to get at least 4+ years out of these tires.

Yes, you have to adjust your driving style a little bit, but they don't wear out fast. If they don't inspire confidence when you drive on dry pavement, it's because you're driving too fast or stopping too fast. Once you start driving in snowy/icy conditions, that's where your confidence will shine. No more white knuckles.

I bought the stock 235/55/17 and they cost just under $700 USD last year (the first year they were available).

If you drive your Mustang in snowy climates and you don't have dedicated snow/ice tires....you're just kidding yourself. Spend the $ on tires instead of an insurance claim when you go off into a ditch.

:nice:

I'm just used to my old school snowies (old pair lasted 8 years). I think they still make that truck style, but just for 15" rims and smaller. My Pirelli 410 snowsports are great on the wet pavement - no snow here yet tho. I don't drive too fast or brake too late, but I'm just not thinking out the technology that goes into these newer style snow tires - I just think >> big knobby tread = better

I have a beater toyota 4x4 pickup...my GT onlys sees snow or rain if it looks out the garage window!!

Haha Same. I even cleaned both garage windows so the Stang can see what Im saving her from! If it's only an inch or so of snow, I still take my DD Sable. But if it gets real bad, then I take my 93 F-150 4x4. I just don't like to add a ton of miles to it unnecessarily as it only has 67k miles on it

And I intend on driving it a LONG time....lol
