say nvidia, i live in norcal. Have you heard anything about that law where cops can pull you over and inspect under your hood for "illegal modification"?

Actually, I heard about that through Stangnet. I was curious, so I asked a coworker if he heard anything about it. He told me that he got pulled over in his V6 truck cause it was so loud that he was shaking the ground in a canyon he was driving through and a cop was sitting there waiting for speeders.

The officer asked him what he had done under the hood. He said "Nothing". Then the officer asked him if he objected to someone testing his car.

So then, supposedly, the cop radioed in a vehicle, a mobile smog tester, that looks like it had a miniature dyno on the back and put the back of his car on it. Then they smog tested him right on the spot in the canyon. After that, the guy running the smog testing vehicle (a smog-certified technician working for the the police) came around to the side of the car and told him to pop his hood. He then went through and checked everything right down to the air filter for "illegal modifications". He wanted the CARB EO number for the K&N filter on the spot. My friend didn't have it, but since the guy got another guy with the same filter a day earlier, he said it was okay, but he wouldn't be so lucky the next time.

So, he passed fine and all, and then took the time to ask the smog guy what it was all about. This is what worries me. The smog guy told him that if they have reason to believe you have those illegal modifications under the hood, they will check every single suspicious part, and if you don't have the CARB EO numbers for everything with you, they will impound your car. From that point, you are paying each day for the impound, the tow there, and the tow to a smog shop that the police trust.

From THAT point, you have to pay for them to order the factory original engine components that you replaced on your car, and if all the parts can't be found within 24 hours, and then put back on, they will either crush or part out and sell your vehicle.

"Supposedly", this is all part of a campaign to help crack down on street racing. I think it's absolute BS. I'm getting the **** out of California as soon as I possibly can and going back to Arizona.

Let me please stress before anyone gets too freaked out, that this is happening in a RICH city. Everyone here has so much money that's it's like Beverly Hills ran out of space and they all came here. The city does a great job earning money, and therefore has a great law enforcement system. It's also the seventh or eighth safest city in the U.S.. What I'm trying to say is don't start freaking out over this just yet - they're probably using our police department as a test program for the rest of California because they have so much money.

Anyway, I'm paranoid cause when they ripped out my clutch they ruined my catted-h pipe clamps and I'm driving around with open headers on the left side of my car right now. I have an O/R H-pipe that I will be getting put on on Monday, but if someone pulls me over, I'm gonna be screwed. Has anyone else heard anything about this law out here?
