What are the ways that you guys have found easiest to mount a tachometer? im not really all that fond of drilling into my dash, but it might be my only option. explanations and pictures of other methods would be greatly appreciated.

oh, and in case anyone hasnt noticed, jegs/summit (not sure on summit) sell "mini" monster tachs, 3-3/8'' with a mini shift light, etc. i like them because they come in the same popular styles, but aren't enormous. anyways, thanks again.

it seems that i'll either just have to man up and screw it in, or the other idea is to have it attached to the steering column via a strap or something. thanks for the reply though, i usually don't get any.

IMO it's better to just man up and secure it nicely than try to skimp on it with double sided tape....I have also seen them strapped to the steering column and still look good.

i think that is the plan (strap). We have it done on my fathers boss 302, so i'll see what happens. i'll be sure to let you guys know, i should be ordering the tach here soon. those suckers are expensive! and what do you guys think...cobalt (black face / blue light) or C2 (white face with blue light). my car is white and blue (georgia highway patrol...see cardomain in sig).

I had the same dilema. I just got done mounting my 5" Autometer tach and shift light. I attached the mounting bracket to the side of the guage cluster bezel like most people do. The two holes I drilled are pretty small, and could probably be filled in with something and be barely noticable if I ever remove it. I'm pretty particular about my car and don't like to do anything permanent, but it's really the best way to mount it IMHO. I positioned it so the bottom rear of the tach rests on the top of the dash pad so it would be more stable and the bezel isn't supporting the full weight of the tach.

For my 5" tach I am going to try to make a bracket that holds it from the underside of the dash somewhere and bolts to the mounting screw on the tach. I haven't looked under the dash yet but I am sure there is a place somewhere to connect it.

Pic of my old 5.0, it was secured with either one or two screws. I think it would be pretty easy to find a replacement piece if you ever got rid of the tach and didn't want the holes.

I know a guy who screwed the tach to the p-side of the gauge bezel and found a spare one from a 4 cyl at a junk yord for $5 for when he wanted the tach out.

like that? thats exactly what i did. my mustang only has 32,000 miles. and i took the cluster out of a donor car i had for a project. screwed it in using some screws. got it set up the way i want it. and it was done. you can get a cluster housing pretty cheap at a boneyard.
