Who had that thread about stuffing the e-fan inside the stock fan shroud??

I can't seem to find it.

That's my next project as i've never liked how my e-fan mounted up and the aftermarket bottle i had to use. I wanna use the stock shroud and bottle so i can hook up a factory low coolant sensor as well.

Hate to say it but the OEM look is cleaner.

That'd be me, and it was my buddy's (fordfan) idea. He's a member here but he works like 80 hours a week and never has time to post, so when he has a cool idea i usually post about it.

The thread is still in Tech...it's pretty simple. You just cut out the circle portion of the fan and suspend it inside the shroud. Make sure you test fit it and get an idea of how "deep" you can go with the fan inside the shroud so that 1) the blades don't hit the radiator and 2) the fan motor clears the water pump pulley.

Sadly i don't think the Lincoln Mark VIII fan is going to work...or at least it was going to take more modification to get it to fit inside the shroud, so the setup works best with the Taurus fan.

I was hoping the tech thread would make it into the technical threads sticky but maybe not. I've since switched back to a Mark VIII fan with its own shroud in place trimmed to fit. I think it's a cleaner look than even the factory shroud and i LOVE how hard those fans blow air. Once i get my hands on another stock shroud i'm gonna work on fitting the Mark VIII inside it (i've already got one cut out waiting).

Thanks!

I actually don't have a mark 8 fan. I have an SN95 fan which i beleive is smaller. The fan shroud doesn't cover the entire radiator which is why i want to use the stock shroud now. It might help draw more air through the entire rad plus the way it mounts rests the e-fan shroud against the fins which i dont like at all.

Cool thanks. The idea was like you said, a small fan should be able to more efficiently draw air through the entire rad. instead of just the center where it's sitting. FWIW, fordfan's car has a 385hp 347 with a 3 core and this setup and i had it out a week or so ago and it never got over 180* on about a 90* day so it does seem to be pretty effective.

The Mark VIII fan is almost perfect for the stock radiator...there's maybe an inch of radiator that's not covered by the shroud. I'll get pics of that setup and post'em up too. Come to think of it, what i've got is technically a 4.6 Tbird fan, which is identical to the Mark VIII except that the fan itself is a single speed and the Tbird has a fan controller seperate (instead of the fan itself being 2 speeds).

I'm seriously thinking of putting the MK VIII fan in the stock shroud since I cant get it to fit in my car without cutting the heck out of it. If I put the fan in the shroud backwards (motor towards the radiator), and it should be flat and flush on the shroud, but the fan blades are directional. I did reverse the polarity on the fan using a drill battery and it seemed like it still moved a rediculous amount of air.

I'm still up in the air about the idea, I havent done any measuring yet to see if it will fit backwards. I had to "settle" for my Taurus fan that I'm building at the moment.

Unless the brushes in the MK VIII fan are designed to be unidirectional (I don't know if they are or not) then running the fan backwards will make for a very short life-span on the fan.

Something maybe worth looking into.

All you need to do with the Mark VIII/Tbird fan is get a ruler and measure 3/8 all the way around the shroud where it sits on the radiator, then draw a line between your marks and get a jigsaw and cut it off. You have to be VERY careful not to cut off too much or else the blades will hit the radiator and you'll be SOL. Then what i did to mount it....get 2 small L brackets from Walmart and rivet them into the bottom of the shroud so they clip into the factory shroud clips, then drill 2 holes in the top of the shroud and get long screws that'll thread into the stock fan shroud clips. This way the fan installs exactly like the factory shroud and it fits great, as long as you trim it right. You really don't have to cut off those stock mounting tabs but it looks pretty dumb if you don't.
