Anyone use a Weiand 71 series blower?

I think they are noisy and hard to get the exhaust quiet. I prefer to walk quietly and carry a big stick. If you want a head turner nothing says look at me like a big GMC sticking out of the hood. Local law enforcement will notice you too though.

I just adore the way they look. It just screams muscle. And I am thinking about going al stock outside/inside except the big blower.

What law enforcement? All there is for miles is a couple county mounties. And I dont get crazy on the street. Too many buddies pushing up daisies because they got wild. Ever sonce I decided to stay small block I have been debaiting 351 or 302 I think a nice 347 well dressed and with a nice blower would look great and perform well.

I had mine on my car for years, never once had an issue with law enforcement.

There are times I really miss my 6-71 setup, was a lot of fun.

I think the only reason you'd run one of those blowers nowadays is if you got a really good deal on it, or you were going for that particular look. There are better options from a performance standpoint.

:jaw: Im diggin it, thats an amazing look! If you dont mind what was the HP output withthat setup? What trans did you use? I was dead set on a manutl 5-speed or 6-speed but the thought of an auto has made its way into my brain cavities.

My point about police is that noise draws attention. If you just putt around it is not a problem. If you blast down the road in my town with a blower just about everyone, about 15000 people, would know. If you were a cop would you look for a car like blown65's or this one.

My F150 was my high school hotrod. It is loud to the point of being obnoxious. It can be heard topping hills a mile off, in town I can be heard streets over. Never got a ticket in that truck, not even when I let her bellow in town. It got attention if for no other reason than the loud exhaust. With 2 10in subs in the cab when I floored to pass someone you couldnt hear them.

Still It wasnt as lound as a friends little hot rod Dodge, Two of my other friends have open pipes on their trucks. Volume is everywhere here, its normal and we are left alone. Its Hicktown, We blow right past law enforcement with the hammer down and they say nothing. The only ticket I have got in any of my toys in the last 2 years was doing 95 in a 70 by a state trooper.

The only worries around here is other small towns where they like to stop you in a 55 mph zone for speeding.

I'm curious as to why people think that a blower will make it "noisy"? Is it just because of the pasasitic loss caused by the blower? IE: A blown motor putting 400HP to the wheels is actually making 500HP but loses 100HP because of the energy required to spin the blower?

It was a fairly mild build, but made about 500 to the wheels. Never did a full run at the strip cause at the time I had just lap belts.

Never once got pulled over and that was after years of using it.

Sure there are better options from a power standpoint. I have no power adders now and run 9's so I think I can figure out the performance stand point of things. :/

My N/A setup now draws just as much attention as that blower did mainly cause of how it sounds. Quiet turbo cars do zip for me.

They don't make the exhaust noisy until you push on the loud pedal. I don't know the physics other than maybe more = more fuel = bigger bang in the cylinder. It may have to do with blower cams having earlier opening exhast timing, allowing more blow down. Go to the track. The loudest cars seem to have blowers, even the slow ones. There gear noise also makes for extra noise, even at idle. If you don't mind noise and like the look I would say do it. The average person on the street will think it is the baddest car they have ever seen.

I have had my share of loud cars and never got pulled over either. I did exercise a little more restraint because of the noise though. I do miss pulling into the local cruise in with a big cam high compression motor and envy the sound. It is the rest of the time cruising to the track or just around town I appreciate the quiet exhaust. I have a ton of respect for your car but I wanted to go a different route with this car. I hope to be joining you in the 9's soon with 3.08 gears, a flat hood and pump gas.

Wow Brian nice build on your car I looked through the cardomain site Very nice!I like the olstyle blowers but I also like the new Procharger style under the hood or nearly under Blow threw desighns with an intercooler.

Thats a really horrible build they did. You could have used a set of decent heads on that 347, bump it to 10.5-1 compression and put down much more then that. Hell even a stock headed short block with a S-trim would have put down more then that.

Definitely a LOT lower HP that i would have thought. Im looking at putting out 300+ with a budget build in a 1970 Sport Custom F100. thats with a 302. A while back I was looking at comfortably putting out 350+ with an EFI 302 truck engine, thats pump gas, streeetable daily driver engine. Patriot Performance has a 347 that puts out 400/425 (something like that) in a ready to install naturally aspired street crate engine.

Im not that great with building engines, but even a newbe like me with limited knowledge can see that build was a waste of time, money and effort. Wieand's website has 2 builds fetured one with over 500 hp. And those are simple.

As a matter of fast it would have probably been cheaper to have just swapped in a modular crate engine. Shortly Ford Racing will offer the new 412hp 5.0 as a crate engine. :nice:

I don't know what it is either. But I've noticed it, and so have the announcer at the track. One of this guys PSCA racers you can hear the announcer say "Here's comes the loudest car at the track" as he comes for a burnout lol. Just a little highported 345. I think he is the fastest one of record now with those heads by .3 He built the car and used his streetcar engine . Pretty much just put in a bigger cam and more boost. But god damn it is loud.

Generally and simplistically speaking, more power = more cylinder pressure = more blowdown pressure = louder exhaust note. Turbos are the same, but the turbines do have a noticeable muffling effect.

I like the stealth aspect of turbos and centrifugal blowers that fit under the hood. I also like the response of a Rootes-style blower. That got me thinking, what about something like a Weiand 177? A Kenne Bell twin screw blower and EFI would be cool too. Better yet, twin turbos and a Rootes blower. Traction and driveline strength might be a problem then. :p Blah, blah, blah. I got no sleep last night.
